Understanding Antennas for Radar, Communications, and Avionics (Uni-Taschenbücher), by Benjamin Rulf, Gregory A. Robertshaw

Antennas are part of every radar, every communications system, and every electronic warfare system. Therefore antennas are an important technical subject. The number of antenna books that have been published in the last 5 years alone attest to this fact. But why another book about antennas? What does this book offer that is different from all the others? The answer is: accessibility. Most of the technical literature on antennas is written for those with extensive backgrounds in electromagnetic theory and familiarity with the mathematical language of vector analysis, differential equations, and special functions. This puts much of the antenna literature out of reach for the nonspecialist who needs to understand the subject but cannot afford the time required to become familiar with all the background material. With the rapid expansion of technical knowledge, the number of engi neering students who find themselves attracted to "classical" subjects, such as electromagnetic theory, is on the decline, making it increasingly difficult to train engineers in areas involving antennas. Some authors in other technical fields have recognized this problem. For example, books on solid-state elec tronic devices that do not require an extensive background in quantum me chanics are available, useful, and informative. This book fulfills a similar Ileed in the area of antennas.

Excellent starting point!
By C.L. Richmond
My mother was recently diagnosed with 'early stage' Alzheimer's, and this book has been a great starting point for my family to figure out where we go next. It covers the whole gamet of the disease, and has just about everything you'd ever want to know about what to expect as the disease progresses.
An easy read too -- which is good because this means that even the person diagnosed with the disease can read and learn from it.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2–4—Mabel is annoyingly organized—a real perfectionist—while her younger sister, Violet, is a free spirit with magical abilities. This revelation comes after many subtle clues appear throughout the novel—whispered secrets among parents, a mysterious ability to find Mom's missing wallet, watching a Frisbee heading toward a window suddenly change directions. (Okay, they're not all that subtle.) As Mabel prepares lists for school shopping, organizes her life and her mom's, and carefully keeps a gift book from Uncle Vartan from Violet's grubby hands, events unfold that reveal a long-kept family secret. While this is a delightful beginning chapter book, the intended audience may stumble over Mabel's lists written in cursive. In fact, she is just entering the third grade where one traditionally learns cursive, so readers may wonder why she writes that way. Fans of Mazer's Abby Hayes will welcome this entry in a new series.—Debbie Whitbeck, West Ottawa Public Schools, Holland, MI

From Booklist
Living with a little sister is never easy, especially if you are organized and responsible while your sister sports tangerine high-tops and a head full of jam. Mabel, the utterly tidy sister, generally tolerates Violet, but life gets harder after mysterious Uncle Vartan sends them a book of fairy tales. Soon after, strange things happen: shoelaces spontaneously untie, and their mother's wallet materializes in the freezer. Mabel's sleuthing unearths a family secret that heightens the sisters' tension, and what begins as a straightforward sibling story morphs into a tale with magical elements. While both sisters are broadly drawn, the story is fun and the embarrassment Mabel feels over Violet's behavior rings true. Short chapters and a mix of full-page and embedded black-and-white illustrations make the text accessible for children reading beginning chapter books. The first of a planned series, this will appeal to readers looking for a magical Judy Moody. Harold, Suzanne

Sisters
By Lynn Ellingwood
I think this is a good simple book about a young girl with a younger sister. It is a good beginning chapter book series that will find a strong readership with young girls in the early grades. I teach ESOL in a middle school but I think this book is a very interesting book for my beginning readers. The girls will enjoy the simple story and be even happier that they can understand it. That is important in language learning.

a really great starter to chapter books ... not so much for the older kids, but for beginners to chapter books, a good choice

No-tillage cropping systems and concepts have evolved rapidly since the early 1960s and are attracting attention worldwide. The rapid growth and interest is associated with increasing pressures for food production from a fixed land resource base with degrading effects of erosion, soil compaction and other factors becoming more noticeable. Research programs have provided many answers and identified new technology needed for success of the no-tillage crop production system in the past two decades and this has resulted in a rapid rate of adoption. Farmers played an important role in the early stages· of development of the system and continue to play an important role in its improvement and rapid rate of adoption. This book provides an inventory and assessment of the principles involved in no-tillage concepts and addresses the application of the technology to practical production schemes. Selected authors and contributors have long been associated either in no-tillage research or application. They represent many disciplines interfacing with the complex interactions of soil, plant and environment. Personal obser vations by the authors in many geographic sectors of the world indicate the principles to be valid but application of the principles to be less uniform. The application of no-tillage principles requires considerable modification as variations in soil and/or climatic condi tions are encountered in different regions of the world.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-Flora, the youngest rabbit in the family, watches as her siblings do their spring planting. When her parents encourage her to participate, Flora decides to plant a brick in a pot so she can grow a house. Her family's flowers bloom and their vegetables are eaten, but to Flora's great disappointment and her family's gentle amusement, her brick remains a brick. In the cozy and satisfying conclusion, the family emerges from their burrow in spring and finds that Flora's brick has indeed become a house-a bird has chosen her pot to make a nest. Gliori's bright, cheerful, full-color watercolor-and-ink art fills the spreads with the lush abundance of spring, summer, and fall gardens. Each illustration is full of homey details that children will want to pore over. With a few lines of text per page, this story is perfect for sharing with groups or one-on-one. The ending will be as much a surprise for readers as it is for Flora. Brick solid!-Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha's Public Library, WI

To thine own self be true
By kennedy19
This engaging picture book for preschool-grade K is one of Gliori's best. Flora rabbit and her older siblings go to work in the garden. While the siblings plant seeds for flowers and vegetables, Flora plants a brick in a flowerpot which she claims will blossom into a house, despite warnings to the contrary. When spring comes, the garden is all in bloom, and it turns out that Flora was right too - her flowerpot has a bird in a nest living on it! Kids will enjoy the gentle humor of this tale, and will identify with Flora having to stick up for herself when her elders dismiss her ideas. The garden pictures are warm and colorful too.

A simple and charming full-color picturebook
By Midwest Book Review
Flora's Surprise! is a simple and charming full-color picturebook written and illustrated by Debi Gliori. Flora the rabbit and her family are all busy planting different things - but while the other rabbits plant seeds, Flora plants a brick and waits and waits for it to grow into a house. A twist ending complements this upbeat and confidently recommended picturebook story.

A Gentle Story of Hope and Persistence
By Margaret Welwood
There was no use pretending. I confessed to the kindergartners before even reading them this story that I’d been surprised. SOMETIMES I can guess the ending to a children’s book, but not this time. It came as no surprise that Norah’s amaryllis, Cora’s tulips, and their brothers’ sunflowers, alfalfa and lettuce grew. But little Flora’s brick, so hopefully planted in a clay pot, didn’t even grow into a house when placed beside the towering sunflowers. Her family was very kind, of course, but truth be told, everyone had grave doubts that the brick would grow.

And then, after the bright fall and dark winter, the rabbit family emerged from their burrow to find . . .

a creature happy with her new home, and a beautiful ending to a lovingly illustrated and gentle story of hope and persistence.

From Publishers Weekly
Miniature worlds can be big attractions, as the films Antz and A Bug's Life show. Unfortunately, this insect adventure, concerning a boy who mistreats ants, provides no basis for its fantasy plot and evokes little sympathy for its hero. Lucas, who wears a goofy propeller cap and nerdish glasses, suffers the taunts of a tough kid named Sid. After Sid blasts him with a water hose, Lucas gets a squirt gun and does the same to a colony of ants. Alas, Lucas is no match for his would-be victims, who use a magical green potion to reduce him to their size and then sentence him to hard labor. ("Don't you realize how long and hard we work to build what you destroy in seconds?" huffs the Queen, who lounges on a pink chaise, smoking through a golden cigarette holder and nibbling gumdrops.) Once Lucas learns a lesson in community, the ants restore him to his original proportions, then devise a predictable comeuppance for his hose-toting nemesis (shrinkage, of course). Nickle's fine-line acrylic illustrations accent the slender digits and mandibles of the black ants; except for the long-lashed Queen Ant, the identical drones, wasps and spider here are painted in entomological detail. The author credibly anthropomorphizes ant societies, stressing equality and cooperation. Yet the facile conclusion denies Lucas a chance to succeed on human terms. Ages 4-7.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-Lucas's funny glasses and strange hat make him a perfect target for Sid, the neighborhood bully, and, since Lucas can't fight Sid, he tortures defenseless ants instead. Then the ants retaliate, and their queen shrinks Lucas to their size, forcing him into a life of hard labor with the worker ants. When he is given the supreme test of bringing the queen a red Swell Jell candy from his home, the boy shows his true mettle, protecting his partners from being swatted by his father. In gratitude, the queen returns him to his normal size, shrinking Sid instead. With the current popularity of the animated movies Antz and A Bug's Life, this title is timed just right for success, but the book falls short. The message is certainly clear, and Nickle's full-page acrylic paintings are bright, funny, and appealing. The text, however, is only average. The sentences are choppy, lack variety in their structure, and leave out potentially interesting details. Still, since the theme of a bully's getting his comeuppance continues to appeal to youngsters, the story is a suitable additional purchase for those collections in which books such as Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's King of the Playground (Atheneum, 1991) are popular.
Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Bullies always find someone smaller than they are to pick on, so when Sid the bully picks on Lucas, Lucas bullies ants, drenching them with his squirt gun. An ant wizard shrinks Lucas, who then goes to work with the rest of the ants, hauling leaves, finding food, and fighting off an attack of wasps. The queen ant strikes a bargain with Lucas; if he will bring her a Swell Jell candy, he will be freed. Lucas's mission is successful, and when he returns to normal size, there's a bonusthe ants downsize Sid. Large, colorful acrylic paintings somewhere in the artistic vicinity of Ms. Spider's neighborhood carry the tale; Nickle uses shifting perspectives to accentuate height, creating giants out of children and mountains out of ant hills; these shifts help convey Lucas's own changing attitudes. Grade 5-8–This collection of stories by well-known authors spans a broad definition of the term friend, and also approaches the topic from a wide variety of viewpoints. There are pieces about real-life friends, imaginary companions, animal friends, and those who fit the old saying, with friends like that, who needs enemies. Some of the selections are written as if the events are happening in the present, some from the viewpoint of an adult looking back at childhood. The selections by Ann M. Martin, Pam Muñoz Ryan, Rachel Cohn, David Levithan, and Patricia McCormick are among the more outstanding entries. It is unlikely that any one reader will like all of them, but it is also likely that every reader will find at least one that hits home. The trick will be to get youngsters to keep reading to find that one.–Nancy P. Reeder, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, SC

Gr. 4-6. Middle-school friends (including some imaginary friends) and enemies feature in many of these short stories by 11 well-known authors, including Virginia Euwer Wolff, Meg Cabot, and Brian Selznick. A few stories are messagey, but some raise questions without presenting a lesson. Adults play important roles in some of the tales. In one story a teacher proves a good friend. In another, elderly pals are drawn without sentimentality. Readers will easily recognize the elemental conflicts about loyalty and betrayal, making this a great title for group discussion. The writers and editors have donated their royalties to the nonprofit Lisa Libraries, which contributes new children's books to organizations serving needy children. Hazel Rochman

Friends: Stories about New Friends, Old Friends, and Unexpectedly True Friends
Martin, Ann Matthews (Editor)
Levithan, David (Editor
The definitions of friendship expressed in this collection of 11 short stories are as varied as the heroines and heroes introduced by well-established authors--including editors Martin (whose selection is an excerpt from A Dog's Life , reviewed above) and Levithan (Are We There Yet? , reviewed below). But nearly all of the protagonists share a burning need to find a kindred spirit. In two of the selections, new kids in town invent confidantes to ease the pain of loneliness. The narrator of Jennifer L. Holm's "My Best Friend" relies on an imaginary girl named Alexandra for companionship at her new home in Florida until she meets an elderly neighbor who admits she talks to an alligator. Patrick Jennings's hero is content spending time with a made-up "pixie friend" named Flit until the boy realizes that Flit is preventing him from making other friends. Other stories explore more traditional peer relationships: accidental and unlikely friendships, bonds that turn sour and animosities that turn sweet, as in Pam Muoz Ryan's (Nacho and Lolita , reviewed above) "The Friend Who Changed My Life" when a new fifth-grader links up with the bully who torments her. Tanuja Desai Hidier's story traces a blossoming friendship at the dawn of India's liberation. One of the most thought-provoking selections closes the anthology, as the now-grown narrator of Virginia Euwer Wolff's "Doll" reflects upon her motives for impulsively showing kindness towards a shunned first-grade classmate. Offering a wide realm of moods, outcomes and morals, these stories are perfect for sharing with friends. Ages 9-12. A collection of touching stories about friendship
By KidsReads
FRIENDS: Stories About New Friends, Old Friends, and Unexpectedly True Friends is a collection of stories by many well-known children's authors. It celebrates the many different forms that friendship can take.

Allegra moves around a lot because her mother is always searching for a better life. She finds herself living in the Shady Grove Trailer Park in Alligator Grove, Florida. Her best friend, Alexandra, has red hair and freckles; the only problem is that she isn't a real person --- she's an imaginary friend. Sometimes that's the best friend a girl can have.

Squirrel is an old dog, and she has done fine on her own for most of her life. The garbage pile was her best friend for a long time, until she met another old girl named Susan. Maybe Squirrel does need a friend after all.

The eleven talented writers in this collection all recognize friendship for what it is: something intangible that passes between two people and creates a special bond. Sometimes the friendship lasts a lifetime, other times it is very brief. And sometimes the friendship is unexpected and comes as a surprise.

The authors of this collection have asked for all the profit from the book to go to the Lisa Libraries. This nonprofit organization donates new children's books to needy children to honor and memorialize children's book editor Lisa Novak. You can find out more about this organization by visiting [...]

Readers of FRIENDS will be able to enjoy touching stories of friendship and help a worthy cause at the same time.

Alien implants. The objects are real. The facts.are indisputable. But where did they come from?

*A woman witnesses a UFO one night in the San Fernando Valley. Ever since, she has carried a small, unidentifiable object implanted in her leg....

THE BEGINNING

CHAPTER ONE

MY intention in writing this book is to provide a clear, concise account of how I applied my medical skills to a phenomenon that has not been looked at seriously by the scientific establishment. By doing this, I think I have come up with some of the most astonishing findings of any UFO research to date.

Fifty years after the modern UFO era began, mainstream science and  medicine still regard the UFO phenomenon as foolish pseudoscience. If UFOs were  taken seriously, there would be multimillion-dollar funding of a  well-planned and coordinated global research effort. Instead, ufology gets  along as best it can with minimal funding, raised largely by public membership  in various UFO organizations and by small grants to individuals from daring  philanthropic individuals.

The story of my own research efforts is one of coincidence, curiosity,  and struggle against many obstacles. This is the story of how a doctor and  scientist got interested in the field of UFOs.

I was awarded the degree of Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in 1964. After  graduation, I trained in surgery, and became podiatric director of residency

training at Simi Valley Doctors Hospital and chief of the Diabetic Foot Clinic  at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Hollywood. During this period I opened a  private practice, where I still work today.

My interest in ufology dates back to July 1947. I can vividly recall my  father walking into our kitchen and announcing to my mother that the United  States Army Air Force had just captured a flying saucer. He was referring to

the famous UFO crash at the air force base in Roswell, New Mexico. He showed

her the newspaper headline and proceeded to explain his views on the subject of  UFOs, discussing in depth his belief in extraterrestrial visitors. He also  expressed his opinion that the government was keeping the phenomenon  secret.

I have never forgotten his sincerity and the passion he had for this  subject, so years later, when a friend asked me if I would be interested in  attending a local MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) lecture, I told him I would, and  accompanied him to the next meeting. The presentation was so interesting that I  decided to attend future lectures, and I eventually became a member of  MUFON.

Coincidentally, at this time my close friend and first cousin, Dr.  Kenneth Ring, had just finished his book The Omega Project. I was  amazed to learn that he had written about the link between UFOs and near death  experiences, or NDEs, because I had personally experienced an NDE that  challenged my scientific assumptions and opened my mind to concepts such as  extraterrestrial visitations. Ken had discovered that both abductees and those  who returned to life, after a traumatic experience or during an operation, saw  the same beings and had some of the same experiences and aftereffects. Because  of my new interest in UFOs, I found this fascinating.

My NDE occurred on August 16, 1973. My recollection is vivid, because  this incident was so traumatic that it changed my life.

On a warm summer evening my close friend Jack, my wife, and I arrived at  Van Nuys airport about 5:30 p.m. We were going to fly  to Bakersfield for dinner. I am a licensed pilot, and had made arrangements  with the fixed base operator to have an aircraft ready and waiting. We parked,  locked the car, and walked to where the FBO had promised to leave the key and  the logbook for the aircraft. We made our way to the parked airplane and  proceeded with the preflight inspection. To my dismay, I found the fuel tanks  almost empty. Never before had I rented an aircraft with so little fuel on  board. I went to the nearest pay telephone, called the FBO at the other end of  the field, and arranged for the gas truck to meet us. We climbed into the  plane. I started the engine, called Ground Control for clearance, and taxied

toward the north end of the airport. In a few moments we arrived there, met the  waiting truck, and issued instructions for the type and amount of fuel needed.  At that point I made my way to the pilots' lounge and checked the weather for  our visual flight rules from Van Nuys to Bakersfield. The weather was reported  as clear, with light winds and unlimited visibility.

The flight would take about an hour. I considered this a short hop, one  I had done many times before. My passengers and I climbed back into the waiting  aircraft, secured our sea belts, and settled in for a pleasant, routine  dinner-hour flight. Jack sat to my right, in the copilot's seat; my wife  sat in the right rear seat. The preflight check had been carried out. I started  the engine and tuned in the Van Nuys ATIS (Air Terminal Aviation Service) radio  station. When I had the necessary information, I changed frequencies and called  Van Nuys Ground Control for clearance to taxi to the active runway. We  proceeded with our taxi roll to the run-up area just short of the  active.

All that was left to do was to finish the preflight checklist and the  final engine run-up. One by one I went carefully over the list. All lights  were on, all instruments checked and set. We were ready for takeoff.

Night was rapidly falling. I called the tower for take-off clearance.  Permission was given, so I taxied into position on the runway and slowly  advanced the throttle until the engine was running at full take-off speed.  I carefully pulled back the stick, and instantly we became airborne. After we  started to climb, I commented to my passengers that it appeared we were going  to be late for dinner.

The atmosphere aboard was relaxed, the departure uneventful and routine.  I headed the nose of our aircraft directly toward the predetermined compass  heading. I set the navigational side of the radio to the halfway point of our  destination. The needle slowly began to center and at a cruising altitude of

ten thousand feet I leveled the nose of our little bird for a calm and smooth  flight.

Everything was functioning normally. It was the beginning of a beautiful  flight. We were starting to see lights below as the dusk melted into the  blackness of night. The panorama appeared crystal clear, just as the weatherman  had predicted. I asked Jack and my wife if they were enjoying the flight. They  seemed relaxed and in awe of the beautiful scene below.

Time passed quickly, and soon the needle on the Omnigator started its  slow swing from the indicted "to" to a "from" configuration. I reset the  radio to a Bakersfield frequency, but nothing happened. This didn't disturb me,  because there had been previous times when this had happened. I simply tuned

Van Nuys back in and continued on my original heading toward Bakersfield. But  then, much to my surprise and dismay, I realized we were experiencing complete  radio failure. The only noise was a continuous popping sound over the speaker  system.

It was now evident that we had lost all communication. I looked ahead  and still could not see any light emanating from the Bakersfield area. This was  strange, because at our altitude it should have been visible. "Perhaps there's  ground fog in Bakersfield," I thought. If that was the case, I did not want to  attempt a landing without radio communication with the ground.

Very important reading. This is not a book of opinion, but of undeniable facts!!
By Cathi
Dr Roger Leir is a hero. What he has sacrificed to bring this information to light is remarkable and selfless. Anyone who does not believe in this phenomenon could not have read this book. You may NOT want to believe, but once you read this book you will find it IMPOSSIBLE to deny that we are not alone. Dr Leir is a brave and brilliant man.

Fascinating read!

Interesting Read
By Spaceman
Book reads well and discusses the authors involvement regarding an intriguing subject. The removals provide no definitve proof or evidence (either way)regarding the composition of the implants or how they got there. At least the author seems fair and balanced in his conclusions and has not made any far out judgements. Gave it a 3 star because of the books relatively short length. Would have given it a 4 star if it was longer. Not a bad read though

This book was written by a doctor who removed implants and recorded the procedures. Quite informative and he seemed sincere.
