Freeman's realistic story is filled with incidents in which the protagonist makes adjustments common to many youngsters. She forgets her math homework, gets scared on a high slide in the school playground, misses her best friend, and runs away after a disagreement with William. Yet with all the conflicts in her life, there is a happy ending: Holly's new teacher is understanding; her parents are relieved and empathetic when she returns home; and her new classmates can't wait to meet her crazy cats. The excellent plot development and characterization make this a good choice for beginning chapter-book readers, who will also enjoy Smith's humorous black-and-white sketches.

Freeman manages to set the stage quickly for this beginning chapter book, establishing Holly as a sympathetic narrator with some real problems and the gumption to work them out for herself. Cat Bowman Smith's many line drawings set a lively, humorous tone, though the children often look older than third-graders. An entertaining choice for children just beyond the easy reader stage. Troublemaker cats spur the action in this comical beginning chapter book from Freeman. Holly, who is afraid of slides and the first day of school, is just beginning third grade in San Francisco, where her divorced mother has re-married William, who is bald, almost half a century old and a boring old lawyer. His four apartment cats, however, are very un-boring. Wibur eats Hollys socks, Max escapes making Holly late for school, Boo is always in the way, and George disappears during the daily cat count. Holly feels crabby when George hides under the covers on her bed, when Max eats one of her favorite cookies, and especially when she has to clean up the cat barf on her pillow all by herself. But her sarcasm goes hand in hand with a sense of humor, and the adversarial cats, in the end, become playmates and win her frineds. Holly may even try to conquer her fear of sliding down the slide. Cat Bowman Smiths (Bedtime!, 1999, etc.) perfectly untidy pen-and-ink scratchings match the zippy writing, hasty pace, and sassy tone of this first chapter book. Wonderful Cats! (and mine)

In all honesty, I think this is a wonderful book for children. And even though I'm well past 40, I still read and enjoy children's books. I must admit I have a special interest here, as I have cats. In fact, I have the four cats mentioned in the foward... I think Martha has really captured the peope/cat interactions, and how they just seem to intertwine into one's daily life. And, as always, Martha's got a real take on what it's like to be a kid these days.

Cat Mania

This is a delightful book, full of fun but also providing a realistic and sympathetic view of a third grader as she adjusts to a new home and step dad. Coping with cats and their pranks while fitting into a new home and family are a challenge for Holly. Her settling into a new life style is presented with warmth and understanding. A reader of any age can share and understand each development. The book is a real treasure.

Molly is a bit of a nerd. She has a full scholarship to Columbia in New York City, and is obsessed with school, physics...and Mark Dahl. Mark is her gorgeous lab partner, and the love of her life. He just doesn't realize it yet. And at the close of their senior year in their tiny Minnesota town, Molly despairs of ever seeing him again. But she is shocked and delighted to find that he is moving to New Jersey, and knows that they are meant to be.

But Molly isn't in New York very long before she finds out Mark's secret. He's gay. And no one but Molly knows. Suddenly their relationship shifts wildly, and Molly finds herself trying to be just a friend to the guy she was sure she was meant to be with, while at the same time trying to mend her broken heart.

Twelve Long Months chronicles Molly and Mark's relationship beautifully. Told from Molly's point of view, it is a vivid look at what happens when suddenly your dreams and expectations collide with real life, and how you can pick up the pieces in order to move on. Molly's voice rings true, and you'll empathize with her as she struggles to make her way through her first year of college, and balance friends, work, and a love life. Malloy's writing is very effective and personal. His ability to reach out to the reader and make that strong connection between protagonist and audience is remarkable. Twelve Long Months is a well drawn out, gratifying, and very humorous read that will especially appeal to anyone who has ever understood the heartbreak of a crush.

Another fantastic novel from Brian Malloy

I adored both Malloy's debut The Year of Ice and it's extremely different follow-up Brendan Wolf. His third effort Twelve Long Months is another wonderful and very different addition to his written works. It's definitely more YA than his two previous books and much lighter in tone but still provides us with a sensitive and endearing protagonist in the form of Molly Swain, following her from April of her senior year in high school to spring of her freshman year in college. Malloy includes some flavorful and quirky supporting players and much of his trademark low-key humor. It may have felt like twelve long months to Molly, but for the reader, the year passes breezily. My biggest complaint would be directed to the publisher regarding the book's cover art. I don't know why they used models who look about 14 y.o. when the characters are 18. I found the cover graphic quite intrusive when I started reading. That aside, Malloy is a writer who creates strong, fully realized voices. I eagerly await his next novel.

Colorful, realistic characters make this a great, light read for all ages

Molly Swain is a rather shy, intelligent high school senior in small town Minnesota, with a major crush on her chemistry lab partner, Mark Dahl, a brooding, sullen but handsome teen, who owes his grade in that class to Molly's help. When Molly finds out that Mark will be moving to New Jersey after graduation, not far from where she'll be going to college, at Columbia in Manhattan, on a full scholarship, she dreams that this one-sided romance might develop into more. But it isn't long before Molly gets a painful revelation ... Mark is gay ... and painfully tries to get over her dreams for them, and be the good friend and confidant that he needs. It becomes easier when Molly starts dating a guy from one of her classes, but fate would deliver another blow she never saw coming.

I've read and enjoyed Malloy's earlier works, "The Year of Ice" and "Brendan Wolf," and now know what I like most about his writing: he has the ability to create multifaceted, realistic characters with whom the reader can relate. We like them for their good qualities, and sometimes even more because of (or in spite of) their faults. Such is the case with all of the characters here, including the families of each of the younger characters. Well written, light read, which I give four stars out of five.

Better Than Before

Advanced Cinematherapy : The Girl's Guide to Finding Happiness One Movie at a Time is pretty much like the orginal Cinematherpy, in the fact that it delivers movies for every emotion possibily known to women. But for those who had a bone to pick with the orginal book (many people complained that the movies listed were ones they had already seen),or if you adore movies from a long ago by-gone era, you're in for a real treat! And for those who perfer modern stuff but are tired of watching the latest Oscar winner, don't dispair: there are lots of good indie movies/movies made for cable/movies that were actually good but no one saw, too! The movies listed in Advanced Cinematherapy range from the 30s to the 90s (although the focus is more on older films) and have every type of genre possible: screwball antics, old-fashioned drama, modern day black comedies, movies that turned legeands into legeands, and well...just plain great movies in general.
My only complaint is that too they didn't include some of the better films, such as Moulin Rouge, Bus Stop, Dirty Dancing etc and instead included movies like The First Wives Club. C'mon, do we really need that? Still, all in all, a good risk if you want something new.

While I don't always agree with the way the movies are divided into chapters, this is a funny book that suggests that watching different classic movies "will cure what ails ya". Laugh-out-loud funny, most of the time.

This book seems to include a greater mix of movies; from yesteryear to modern, from popular to hard-to-find. Food, well, movies for thought.

The conclusions found from this study state that the ideal instrument to measure the psychological state of an old person would measure a wide range of functions: cognition, mood, other aspects of mental state and behaviour in the social context. The structure of the instrument would also allow these elements to be analyzed separately and would be short, valid, reliable, sensitive and easily administered by any professional with the minimum of training.

Insightful and very helpful

I will admit; I have been struggling with body image and "looks" for about as long as I can remember. This book by Kimberly Kirberger helps me to realize that no body is perfect, and that you need to embrace what you look like and have. If you can totally accept yourself the way you are, then you are on your way to success.

After reading this book, I came to realize, and "saw the light" so to speak, about body image, self acceptance, and the search for my identity. I definently think that this book was very helpful in helping me to overcome the "stereotype" that you have to be 105 pounds to be considered beautiful. Now I know that I am perfect in every aspect of my life, and I now love and accept who I am inside...and who I am inside is all that really matters.

I definently strongly encourage those girls who are currently struggling with self acceptance, body image, and the search of who they are, to read this book, and also fill out the Nobody's Perfect Journal as well. This book is very helpful, and insightful, and it will get you back on the right track in life, and make you realize that life isn't all about looks and popularity...rather, it is a journey to love and acccept yourself for who you are!

I read the book No Body's Perfect. It was written by Kimberly Kirberger. It's written about teens and struggles with their everyday life, including eating disorders, boys, and learning who to hang-out with and who not to hang-out with.

This book gets points across to you, for example, "Accepting yourself just the way you are may seem like a pretty big challenge. It may even seem impossible. But it's not." This is one of the great quotes in this book.

This book would be very helpful and influential to teenagers struggling with these problems. I recommend this book to 12- 18 year- old girls. You will love this book!

Pretty Good...Typical of this author's books

I'm a fan of this author's (John Gerald Shea) books. They're older publications that are widely available and usually pretty reasonably priced.

The author somehow manages to overlap his material. Some of the same pieces furniture show up in different books. Interestingly, I've noted that for some of those pieces, the dimensions and drawings can vary between one title and another. Not sure if he simply refined the plans or did the drawings again and just arrived at different numbers on dimensions. In any case, not a big detractor, just something I've noticed.

He provides some general background on the types of furniture along with generally adequate plans for reproducing pieces. You don't get every build detail but there is enough information for a good start. Just don't expect a step-by-step how-to guide on how to build each piece.

Probably not a stand-alone book, but so reasonably priced that you can add it to your collection of Shaker reference books as an additional title.

If you like the Shaker styles, this is a great reference book for building your own furniture. The book has great illustrations and drawings to assist the woodworker in making his own furniture.
