This thesaurus was everything that I expected and more....everyone at my son's school wanted to know where we got it including the teacher. I of course told them that I got it from amazon.com and that it was the only choice for us.

The American Heritage Thesaurus

This is just one of many thesauruses (or dictionaries of synonyms, for that matter). No worse and no better than any, really.
Like Roget's or Rodale's Synononym Finder, it will prompt you the right word, the mot juste that you surely knew but can't recall now. But it won't explain to you any difference in meaning or style between it and its neighbours in the row, or the scope of words your word usually goes with, if the word is new to you.
It might be a handy alternative to a Roget's thesaurus if you a native speaker of English, but is little of use if you are an English learner.

Excellent Thesaurus

As a writer and college English instructor, I find the American Heritage Dictionary a superior reference compared to other popular dictionaries, and this thesaurus lives up to the standard. I recommend this tool for all aspiring writers wishing to expand their vocabulary and find the perfect word.

With the exception of the rescue of his best friend, there is little excitement in this plotless, formulaic story. Also, Corey's facility with language doesn't ring true. The historical note at the end of each volume offers interesting facts and a few black-and-white photos. The large font size and short entries make these books quick and accessible to reluctant and good readers alike. Although not great literature, they may be popular historical-fiction choices for kids who are willing to suspend disbelief.

There, an entire community of people of color welcomes them and helps the family build new lives in freedom. Children need not be familiar with book one of Corey's diary, Freedom's Wings (2001), to take up this continuation. Through Corey's entries and the informative notes, children find out about African Canadians, like those in Corey's new home, who owned land and businesses, had their own churches and schools, and eagerly helped newcomers like the Birdsongs get on their feet. In the course of his diary, Corey escapes a slave catcher and helps a friend steal away from Kentucky to freedom--episodes that add excitement as well as historic relevancy. Corey Birdsong and his family have reached freedom in Canada in this sequel to Freedom's Wings (not reviewed). His journal relates the last harrowing days of their flight from slavery, their feelings of rapture upon arrival, and the steps they take to forge a new, independent life. They are welcomed in a community that is made up largely of other former slaves. Here they dare to dream of owning their own farm, of proper schooling, of making their mark. Corey is fascinated by the people around him, and makes special note of the black people who have responsible, respected places in society. But they must always be aware that there are slave-catchers just over the water who are waiting for a chance to recapture the runaways and return them to slavery. And always in their hearts are the people they left behind, like Corey's best friend Mingo. Wyeth breathes full life into Corey. His voice is true and clear. He is loving, curious, intelligent, brave, and determined. He's thrilled by all the new sights, sounds, and experiences, and describes everything and everyone with delightful and insightful enthusiasm. There are many well-written works for children concerning daring and dangerous escapes along the Underground Railroad, but most end with the first steps into Canada. Here, finally, is a glimpse of what came next. Heartwarming story.

In Corey's first Diary, we learned about slave life, and the heartbreaking conditions they were forced to endure. Now Corey and his pregnant mother have managed to get to Canada, with the help of the Underground Railroad, where they can be free. Corey's parents find jobs, buy some land and build a home. And best of all, Corey can now go to school and learn to read and write without having to hide it.
But Corey misses his friend Mingo, who is still living as a slave down south, and writes him a letter encouraging him to come to Canada too. When he sees a poster with Mingo's picture on it, saying he's wanted by the slave catchers, Corey knows that Mingo is on the run and fears for his friend's safety.
Corey's family prepares to celebrate Christmas in their new home, but Corey is about to have even more to be thankful for this holiday. Readers will find out why, when they read FLYING FREE, the heartwarming story of people finding a new life in a community where they can live proud and free.

nice and an interesting story

In the book Flying Free, by Sharon Dennis Wyeth, A boy named Corey and his family escape from slavery in Kentucky America to start a new life in Amherstburg in Canada. They were able to escape with the help of the Underground Railroad. In Canada, they get their own home and Corey goes to school. With the help of their neighbors, they were able to build their new log cabin. Corey and his family got jobs and started earning their own money. Although Corey was happy with his freedom and new life, he missed his friend Mingo who was not able to escape. Corey sent Mingo a letter convincing him to escape from slavery and hoped for him to come to Canada. Soon, Corey received a letter from Mingo informing him of his escape.

Mingo then arrived to Canada where he lived with Corey. The story is very nice interesting, but the author could have done a better job with English language usage (spelling and grammar).

Grade 1–3—Arnosky takes his nature storytelling one step further, adding music to the mix. This book takes a direct look at different animals and what they eat. It works well as a picture book, telling readers that if they were wild raccoons, or crocodiles, or great white sharks, they would "gobble up" crawdads, or ducklings, or fishes. The catchy song sung by the author on the accompanying CD adds the element of fun that's advertised. In recognizable, true-to-life acrylic illustrations that fill the spreads, the raccoon ambles into the forest, and a large crocodile opens its huge jaws to swallow up hapless little ducklings. The message, of course, is that this is what we must all do to survive. "We eat the food we have, and then—we have to hunt for food again!" My 5 and 2 year old LOVE this book

My 5 and 2 year old LOVE this book. The CD makes the book come alive with the 'Gobble It Up!' song. It is a fun way to introduce the food chain. My son's favorite part is the sperm whale and giant squid. Another great book by Jim Arnosky!

Can't get enough of this book!

I'm a children's librarian and ever since I discovered this book I've been doing a lot of story hours about eating! The kids love it, it's easy enough to have them all singing along by the second reading -- and they always ask me to read it "AGAIN". And, they're learning something too. It's a winner.

We are the upper cats. This is a magnificent book. This is about a kid named Corey. He escaped from slavery. He lives on a farm in Amherstburg,Canada. Corey has four pigeons he races with and Just

( the pigeon ) always wins. Corey got a job on a ferry boat called the Pearl. He went to Michigan twice. When he went to Ohio he got stuck there and found Gladys and her mother. When he got back to his house his mom was so delighted to see her son. Christmas came. Read the rest of the book to find out what happens.

I give this book 4 stars.

Why: Because this book teaches people about how slaves were treated, it shows how mean people were to slaves, it shows people how they were escaping because they didn't have any freedom, it shows how black people SHOULD'NT be treated differently than white people because they aren't ANY different so they shouldn't be treated differently. It also shows that how Corey is a hero and how.

Grade 7-10–Spinner's Quiver (Knopf, 2002) was a somber and fully imagined re-creation of the myth of Atalanta. Quicksilver, as befits its subject–the god Hermes–is lighter and occasionally even silly as the author aims for the appropriate narrative voice for this multifaceted deity who escorts the dead to the underworld. In the early pages, the trickster aspect of Hermes's personality dominates as the messenger god runs errands for Zeus, the father he loves, and gets involved in the lives of the mortals and demigods whom he encounters. At times he seems almost like the wisecracking buddy on a sitcom. But as the story continues, Hermes's more serious side comes through, and his narration takes on darker tones. Because he is not generally a central figure in the myths, Spinner's Hermes is something like a tour guide, recounting the actions of others–Persephone and Demeter, Perseus, Odysseus–and commenting on their foibles, as well as offering insights into their all-too-human behavior. The author excels at portraying her subject's longing to please his father, his sense of loss when his half-brother Apollo goes too long between visits, his love for Calypso, and his deep disdain for cruelty, particularly apparent in the chapters dealing with the Trojan War. Not quite as successful as Quiver in completely inhabiting an ancient world and mind-set, Quicksilver nevertheless offers an entertaining version of several important myths and a view of divinity starkly different from the Judeo-Christian one. Enjoyable novelization of the mythological figure Hermes

Stephanie Spinner returns to the exciting world of Greek Mythology with QUICKSILVER, the story of winged messenger Hermes. Her previous novel, QUIVER, brought to life the story of the swift Atalanta.

Hermes had many roles, including bringing the dead to Hades and acting as swift winged messenger to and from the gods. He is shown almost as a young adult, trying to please his father Zeus while learning his responsibilities and principles. His mischievous side adds to the wonderful stories.

Several of Hermes's stories are described here, including how he helped King of the Underworld Hades and goddess Demeter compromise over the beautiful Kore; and a tale of the changing seasons.

Readers will especially enjoy the adventure of Perseus cutting off the head of snake-haired Medusa, which showcases the clever wit and multiple talents of Hermes.

The apple contest decided by Paris that leads to the Trojan War brings out a new side in the Messenger. He is horrified by the senseless death and the way his family of gods takes sides.

His last adventure listed here, saving Odysseus from the bewitching Calypso, brings a happy end for Hermes.

It's fun to see the classic adventures novelized. BULLFINCH'S MYTHOLOGY can offer background and more information for those who are interested, and readers also may want to see the 1981 movie Clash of the Titans for another look at Perseus's tale. But you don't have to be an expert in Greek mythology to enjoy QUICKSILVER.

A better book by Stephanie Spinner!

This a hilarous book about greek myths told from the eyes of hermes! It is of couse as a said above, hilarous! I read QUIVER also by Stephanie Spinner, i found this book much funnier, and entertaing. My problem with QUIVER was that you felt like there was something importent missing and Spinner didn't make Atalanta her own, but in this book she makes hermes real almost like he is telling you the story. I liked all the storys but i did feel like she rushed through them, as if to keep the book short. I do recommened this to someone who loves greek mythology!

Quirky and clever

QUICKSILVER is a collection of some of the popular Greek legends that we are so familiar with, but given with a fresh attack because they’re told from the point of view of Hermes, God of Travelers and Mischief. I liked this book because in other stories, Hermes was often in the sidelines – the spotlight being taken by more popular gods and goddesses – but in QUICKSILVER, I didn’t only get to know him better; I was inside his head. I appreciated him more as I discovered that although he likes to play pranks, he’s peace-loving (a trait not often shared by the other Olympians) and enjoys the affection of his father Zeus and brother Apollo. That’s actually my favorite aspect in the book – his relationship towards his family. It shows a different side of Hermes. That he seeks Zeus’ approval and appreciation shows that among the twelve Olympians, he’s the most ‘human’ in feelings. He also suffers from guilt and shame because of the not-so-good things he had to do before. And that sets him apart from his family. He chose not to get involved in a war even though it caused him to drift apart from his father and siblings. He’s also obedient and loyal. No wonder he’s the messenger of gods.

Stephanie Spinner did a great job in giving voice to an often-overlooked and under-appreciated Greek deity. I really enjoyed reading QUICKSILVER. It wasn’t hilariously funny, but it’s quirky and clever and shows Hermes in his best and worst.

Preview a copy before buying

There is a point where simplicity converts to banality, and this book treads that line a little too closely for my tastes. Those new to bar culture may find something to wonder over here, but anyone interested in magic probably won't.
Having said that, I disagree, slightly, with others who've gone so far as to say that the book--and especially its cover--are misleading. The cover describes the tricks as "idiot-proof", and they are. The tricks are well-illustrated and competently explained. As the cover claims, you will learn how to pass a dollar bill though a lemon, and make a coin walk across the table. To be sure, there's nothing in the book that will teach you how to create the image of a levitating olive as depicted on the cover, but the cover is basically honest.
If it oversells the book at all, it does so when it claims the tricks will "amaze" friends. It's best to say, as the back cover points out, that the tricks will help smooth over awkward conversational moments. Because of the lack of anything truly breathtaking, or even much that's subtle, this book is best previewed at a local library before purchase. IIt's probably not a smart impulse buy.

A Bartender's must read

This is a fun book well worth the price. If you bartend, your first couple of tips will pay for it.
I learned a few new tricks and enjoyed seeing the ones that served me well during those 'slow nights'.
Of the few books I've seen on the subject, this has the best collection of them. I am in Sales now and guess what, these tricks are still fun!

Not what I thought it would be...

I purchased this book hoping to learn a few cool magic tricks I might be able to pull of in a bar. I was immediately interested by the cover of the book, which pictures an olive levitating over a martini glass. From this picture, and from the the words "Levitate an olive..." which also appear on the cover, I assumed there might be a trick inside to make an olive appear to levitate. There is, however, nothing of the sort. The olive trick turns out to be a pretty stupid bar bet that has nothing to do with even the appearance of levitation. And it only gets worse from there. Most of the tricks in this book are, as the cover does advertise, incredibly simple; the problem is most of them are so simple they are completely uninteresting. Personally I am glad I never met the author in a bar while he was researching material for this thing.
My feeling after reading this is that it is a collection of trite gags that will cause the people around you to groan and leave you sitting alone at the bar, buying your own drinks and cursing the day you ever tusted the other reviewers on this one.
