More than science.

For those who like a tad more than the content area of a book, this one is the cat's meow. It's the first edition of a classic book by a classic man. I have many seashell books but when I got the chance to get a signed copy by this distinguished author, regardless of the later, 100+ page second edition, I jumped quickly. The tone of the writing shows the total immersion into the literature as well as the human part of him. From the dedication to his children to the humble preface, this book shows the heart and soul of a good man, doing a good job, without striking attitudes or editorial comments so common today.

If I need identification I'll use Dr. Abbott's Compendium, among others. If I want to slip back to the good old days of diving, photographing, and collecting shells in the Indo-Pacific seas I read sections of this classic. Not that it deals with that area but it relates to that beautiful mystery of the sea and its creatures. Instead of an "I" book, this is a "we" book. North American mollusks may be better covered in the 1974 edition but this is the first, held by and signed by the master.

Gr. 3-6. An Italian immigrant child writes her diary in these two small books that are part of the My America series. Hope in My Heart is the most dramatic. After the family finally arrives at Ellis Island, nine-year-old Sofia is separated from her parents and quarantined. Terrified, angry, and knowing almost no English, she is at the mercy of officials and doctors, some of whom are prejudiced and corrupt. Only her friendship with an Irish girl and the support of a kind official and a priest make her life bearable, until her heartfelt reunion with her family. Home at Last is a conventional account of Italian Americans who struggle and eventually make it in the North End community of Boston. A teacher makes a huge difference, as does a doctor, whose character is based on a real person, Lasky's husband's grandfather. As is often the case with books in this series, the diary format is an awkward contrivance, but it certainly makes the tale more immediate. A historical note and archival photos add to the story. Sofia's story continues.

Nine-year-old Sofia has finally been reunited with her family after a month in quarantine on Ellis Island, and now they have traveled to Boston to build their new life in America. Sofia's father finds a job in a grocery store, and Sofia begins attending school. She enjoys learning English and making new friends, although she misses her best friend from quarantine, Maureen, whose family has settled in New York City. Sofia describes in her diary her life over seven months as her family adjusts to their new lives in America and sees their dreams begin to come true. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy the My America series and have read Hope in My Heart, Sofia's first diary.

Some Inaccuracies

I was excited to find this book, as my grandfather came to America as a young boy from Italy around the same time that this story takes place. While there are many features of the story that accurately reflect the Italian immigrant culture of that era, there were some comments that were more reflective of present day ideologies. Religion is important in the Italian culture. While its prominance was indicated in the story, there were some comments that were uncharacteristic of their faith. I was disappointed when the doctor, a prominent character, tells the young girl "I believe in all gods...I see God in that tortellini." It was also disturbing to read Sophia suggesting that "hard hoping" was better than praying in difficult situations. Strong faith sustained and encouraged so many Italian immigrants and I felt the story portrays a distortion of their religious beliefs.

THE BEST!!!!

These books are listed in Story of the World's suggested extra reading list, so I ordered the set of three.....book one, two and three. My 9 year old daughter LOVES them! We finished book one in one day. (she loves to be read aloud to, so I read it to her, which I love because I get to hear the book too!) It goes perfectly with what we are learning in history and along with other Jamestown history books, so it has brought history to life for her! It is a fiction account of a girl in 1609 arriving in the colony of Jamestown, but it personalizes history---so now we know the real-life trials as we have fallen in love with the characters. It is a very easy read, but informative too.

I loved it! If you like ghost stories, this is for you. I have already looked some of the places up, and they go along with the book. (I almost emailed England about another place.) Great stories. I highly recommend it!!!

The stories are very short but cleverly written!

We saw one of the stories read on Ghost Adventures and just had to buy the book to find out more. Well, this little book did not disappoint us. It fits nicely in one's purse so you can take it anywhere with you. The stories are enjoyable and scary! A fun read when you don't have a lot of time to invest in a novel.

Good Mystery!

Our family has enjoyed all the adventures of the Magic Tree House series. We were intrigued by this new book from Mary Pope Osborne and it did not disappoint. My children liked the cast of bug characters, and we all enjoyed the mystery, and the twisty endings. We hope for more Spider Kane Mysteries!

A really very well organized book on a very important phase of software engineering i.e. "Reuse and Reverse Engineering".
In this book, in initial chapters the author has discussed number of practical examples. He focused on how the different organizations have faced problems dealing with their working and how they handled the situations/improved step by step. And the way he discribed is really beautiful. The author has not only given examples from only one type of organization but from different areas.
After elaborating number of different examples he has started explaining in detail about the terms "reuse" and "reverse engineering". How exactly it works? what are the steps to follow? and alongwith the technical details and information about it he continued giving the same example which he has already given in the first chapter of the book. This really helps to understand the topic, the term and the concept.
I personally like that book/ organization of the book very much. Though this subject to study in universities is theorotical but because of the availability of this book it really becomes very interesting.
This book is made for all readers interested in software engineering in general and university students in particular.

Fun, Grade School Boy Humor

My son, 8, is a huge Andy Griffiths fan. He loves the The 13-Story Treehouse and The Day My Butt Went Psycho series and has read them all multiple times. The silly, slightly rude and occasionally gross, but not over the top (it's all along the same lines as Captain Underpants), humor is right up his third-grade-boy alley.

The book versions of this "Just" series are hard to find, no longer available or never offered in the U.S., but the CDs, for whatever reason, seem readily available. My son loves listening to these shorter stories before he falls asleep and tells me, "Mom, they're so funny."

I've listened to a few and you definitely need to be a young boy to "get" this humor, but it's all pretty harmless and anything that gets my son reading with the passion Andy Griffiths books do, is a winner in my book.

Weird, Wacky, and Fun: Not to be read to a class at school

The bizarre antics of Andy, the narrator, had me laughing and shaking my head. I love weird stories by authors with off-beat senses of humour, and this book fits the bill. My favorite story of them all is the one where he invents an invisible friend to help him get out of field day, but his mom turns the tables on him by treating the best friend even better than she treats Andy.

I'm an elementary school teacher, and WOULDN'T READ this to my class due to some of the situations presented. The most disturbing story was the one where Andy dressed up as a girl and went to a dance, where one of the boys tried to pick himi up. However, I will read it to my children at home because I know there won't be any complaints. It's a perfect book to pick up when you have 10-15 minutes to spend reading because you can easily finish each short story within that time.

Hilariously funny

Just Annoying is a great book. I finished reading it to my class the other day. All of us laughed throughout virtually every aspect of the book. The book is made up of smaller 10-15 page stories about a boy named Andy and his crazy antics. The first story starts the book off with a bang. It is about the boy traveling through Austrailia with his family. He pesters his parents non stop during the car trip. Any human being can probably put themselves in Andy's or his parents shoes. This is a must read for anyone who likes to or needs to laugh. I personally am going to pick up the rest of the books in the serries. If the others are half as good as this one.....then they will be worth the money. The funniest book I've ever read.
