The classical book of otolaryngology, Atlas of Head and Neck Surgery by Silver and Rubin, is back on my bookshelf by its new edition. This edition is updated by new clasifications made in Head and Neck Surgery by the AJCC few years ago. By this way, the new beginners at Otolaryngological Surgery can briefly and easily understand the new terminology without falling into controversies made for years. There are multiple figures for each procedure and this helps the reader to understand quicker. It includes nearly all procedures on Otolaryngological Surgery; from laryngectomies to neck dissections and craniofacial approaches. Grade 5-8–This novel is rich with believable, endearing characters as well as excitement and emotion. Dina, 13, can't wait to leave Germany and begin her new life in America with Mama's rich brother and his family. She longs to finally escape the drudgery of her mother's sewing shop, even though she is often reminded, "As much as you hate sewing, Dina, that's how much the needle and thread love you." As soon as she arrives at the cramped, five-story walk-up, however, she knows that she has entered a house of tailors, "no different from my own, except that it was poorer." Though she helps Aunt Barbara with the house and baby Maria, Uncle Lucas views her as a burden. She has no choice but to sew for him, her only consolation being the 40 cents he will give her each day toward her passage home. Gradually, Dina grows to love her new family, meets another "greenhorn" with whom she can reminisce and trade new American words, and becomes a promising hat and dressmaker. She also nurses Barbara and Maria through smallpox and carries the child to safety during a devastating fire. Readers get a glimpse into life in Brooklyn in the 1870s, especially the dreaded Health Department inspections during the epidemic. After arriving, Dina finds herself in Brooklyn, sleeping in a stifling closet. Worst of all, she must earn her room and board by sewing. Although talented, Dina despises the work, but sewing is part of Uncle's plan to improve their situation, so Dina finds herself either at the machine or doing the endless work of a tenement life. There are many books about immigrants in the U.S; the strengths of this one are its profuse details and its cranky heroine. And a heroine Dina is, sometimes exaggeratedly so, as when she saves both Barbara and Marie from a fire. Yet, Dina is not a stock character; she's a real child, who works hard, literally and figuratively, to find her way. When she realizes that designing dresses is something she loves, readers will cheer her perseverance, and the happy ending seems well deserved. Ilene Cooper

The brave little tailor

Historical fiction is that huge genre of children's books that I am just not as familiar with as I should be. The field tends to be dominated by such big names as Richard Peck and, in this case, Patricia Reilly Giff. As a child I was always far more interested in books of fantasy and magic, and I am afraid that very little has changed since I have grown. But "A House of Tailors" is one of those well-written works of historical fiction that can draw in even a fantasy-preferring twit like myself. Giff brings to beautiful colorful life the world of 1870 Brooklyn, New York. The dirt, the disease, and the small human pleasures of it all.

Dina is desperately jealous of her older sister Katharina. While Dina must stay in Germany doing what she hates most, sewing, Katharina is going to America to live with their rich Uncle. At this moment in 1870 Germany is at war with France, an annoyance to Dina who likes to swap patterns with her friend Elise on the French side. But when Dina escapes one morning to do her usual swap and is caught by German soldiers thinking her a spy, her escape can only be brought about one way. She will have to be the one sent to America and not her sister. Dina is embarrassed and distraught but the fact that she won't be sewing anymore is some comfort. Yet when she arrives in America, the streets her uncle takes her down become dirtier and dirtier. Finally they reach the last one, climb all the steps to the top floor, and enter the apartment. That's when Dina sees the sewing machine in the middle of the room and realizes that she has simply exchanged one house of tailors for another. Now she must save her money to return to Germany, but not before growing to love her family, the boy in the men's shop down the street, and this crazy mixed up town called Brooklyn where dreams of the future came sometimes come true.

Giff's heroine undergoes a perfectly conceived series of changes and she grows and learns realistically in this new world of America. At first, Dina is really quite awful. When she runs off and does something without thinking you instinctively begin to cringe, knowing full well that some awful comeuppance is about to occur. At the same time, however, she's intelligent and ingenious, not to say heroic. It becomes clear that her true love is hatmaking and not sewing, and the sequences in which she describes the creation of a hat are truly amusing and wonderful. They reminded me at times of the hatmaking in Diana Wynne Jones's, "Howl's Moving Castle". Then there is the storytelling, something that Giff has perfected over the years. This book is an almost perfect series of adventures and misadventures with a steady rising/falling action that retains interest right up until the end. If you want something on the mid-19th century German immigrant experience, I can think of few books that tell their tales half as well as this one.

Giff tells us in her Afterword that the Dina featured here is based on her own great-grandmother's life. One hopes that Ms. Giff has more ancestors from whom to plunder this kind of rousing story. Whether the book's showing the ways to battle smallpox or escape from tenement fires, it's a grand testament to a long gone time. A truly enjoyable book that kids will find themselves surprised to enjoy.

Dina's stitches are small and straight. She has a sense for color and fabric. Dina's gift is sewing but she hates it. She longs to go to America and live with her uncle and his family but when she ends up having to flee to New York from her home in Germany she finds her dream and the reality of life in Brooklyn are far apart.

Giff can put the reader into the setting of a story better than any other writer. In her novel, "Nory Ryan's Song," we knew when the blight had overtaken the potato crop because we could "smell" it. In this book we sense the crowded streets, the cooking in the tenements and the soot from the fires of Brooklyn in the 1870s. The crowding, disease and long back breaking hours of labor that were part of the immigrants life are accurately depicted. The joys of the her new land include her first taste of ice cream, a new friend, Johann, and her niece and nephew. Dina longs for her home and family in Germany but finds she cannot imagine leaving her new family and friends. She takes great pride in her talent for hat and dressmaking and ultimately makes a place for herself in her new country. Dina is a wonderful character full of strength and love.

Giff wrote this story as a tribute to her great grandmother. Her touching afterward describes which stories from the book which came directly from her own family history.
Patricia Riley Giff is one of the most honest writers I have ever read. She is like an accomplished musician, every note of her books rings true and touches the heart

As this novel opens, we meet a family of tailors living in Germany. The mother and her 2 daughters work making clothes for others. The daughters, Katharina and Dina, find out that Katharina is being sent to America to live with an uncle. Dina is upset that her sister is going without her, but happy that she will be living out one of her life long dreams. After Dina becomes involved in a serious situation, the family decides it will be best for her to go to America in Katharina's place.

Dina is faced with several delimma's after arriving in America. She and her Uncle have trouble getting along. After one argument she decides to save money and go back to Germany. Will she ever make it home?? Then she is faced with another question..Where is home?

Giff has really created a masterpiece with "A House of Tailors". When I finished this book, I wanted to know what else happened to the characters. I wanted more! I think Dina is someone all readers will look up to. She copes well when placed in diverse situations. She can teach us all a lesson about ourselves, no matter what our age!

Levine (If You Traveled on the Underground Railroad) debunks some widely believed legends about Danish resistanceAfor example, that every Dane wore a yellow Star of David when the Germans ordered the Jews to do so (in fact, the Germans never promulgated this order in Denmark). As she persuasively demonstrates, however, those legends reflect truths about the Danes in their essential solidarity and rejection of Nazi thinking. While she lists the factors that gave Denmark advantages over other Nazi-occupied countries, she also focuses on the experiences of individuals who, almost as a matter of course, risked their lives to defy the Nazis. Unlike many writers, she treats the extraordinary rescue of nearly the entire Danish Jewish population in October 1943, as only part of the story of the resistance, in fact positing that Nazi persecution of the Jews and the success of the rescue mission led to enormous popular support for the resistance. Beyond saving the Jews, Danes sabotaged munitions factories, supplied critical information to British bombers and organized devastating strikes. The author cross-cuts from a general narrative to focus on specific persons; it is sometimes difficult to keep track of these individuals, but virtually all their stories are inspiring. Interspersed with the straightforward history are first-person accounts of the war years, mainly based on the author's interviews with Danes who escaped, assisted with escapes, or joined the resistance. These accounts help make these increasingly distant events come alive. The well-chosen black-and-white period photographs and reproductions add to the text, and the cover (a montage with Hitler's face looming over a scene of a burning rail yard and running boy) is particularly striking. The brief biographies of the people interviewed, telling what they did during and after the war, make for touching reading. An excellent history and an inspired complement to Lois Lowry's Number the Stars (Houghton, 1989).

Like Carmen Agra Deedy's book The Yellow Star, reviewed on p.2024, this compelling rescue account makes clear that the well-known legend about the King of Denmark's wearing a Jewish star never actually happened, though most Danes and their king rejected the anti-Semitism of the Nazis and did help Jews hide and escape. This thrilling narrative history weaves together the events of the Nazi occupation with eye-witness testimonies of those who were there, based on personal interviews with more than 20 Danish survivors, rescuers, and resistance fighters--among them, doctors, clergy, and policemen who refused to obey the Nazis. As with all good rescue stories, we are always aware of what the Jews are escaping, including Danish Nazis who cooperated with the Germans and betrayed the Jews. There are whole chapters about people who did not get away, and there's an account of the brutality suffered by victims deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp in Czechoslovakia (the pressure of the Danish government saved all but 50 Danish Jews). The book design is spacious, with high-quality paper, clear type, and occasional black-and-white photos smoothly integrated into the text, including portraits of children and adults taken at the time. The forceful climax of the story is the two-week-long rescue by boat to Sweden of more than 1,000 people. Just as eloquent is the account of the escapees' quiet return after the war: unlike the survivors in many other countries, most Danish Jews came back to find their homes intact, exactly as they left them. Bravery, courage, and selflessness, characteristic of the Danish resistance during WWII, are bright glimpses of hope during a dark period of world history. The history of the Danish resistance is recorded chronologically, with individual rescue stories woven throughout. This beautifully rendered acount, including photographs, is printed on thick, rich paper, underscoring the beauty of what was accomplished by the Danish people. Recommended for young adults and adults interested in the topic.

Levine interviewed dozens of Danes from rescuers and survivors to those captured for this inviting probe.

Courage of the Danes

The courage of the Danes in World War II just blew me away when I read this book. I first read it because Lois Lowry's book Number The Stars struck my intrest. When I read the stories of the Resistance and the Jews, I can admit I cried. The author tells their stories perfectly. She conveys the courage these people had and how brave all those young Resistance leaders were but does not leave the hardships endured by these people. It is certainly a wonderful reference book for anyone doing a project on the Holocaust. There was only one thing that disappointed me. There wasn't a reference to the permeated handkerchief that fishing boat captains used after the Nazis started using dogs to search the boats.

Frozen sea­ foods are often treated and traded as commodities, with standard descriptions. Marketing and distributing fresh fish and shellfish, which has to be eaten within days of harvest, is necessarily more personal and direct. The contest between refrigerated and frozen seafoods has continued for many years and shows no signs of resolving. Despite massive im­ provements in the quality of much frozen product, consumers and their retail and restaurant suppliers still tend to believe that "fresh" is bet­ ter, perhaps simply because the word "fresh" is naturally appealing.

Exciting third book in the Spy X series.

Eleven-year-old twins Andrew and Evie Wall thought they were finally getting close to finding their mom, a spy who has been missing for over a year, in their new home of San Francisco. But then they were betrayed by someone they thought could be trusted, and they fear they are at another dead end. But then they receive another package from Mom, with more clues to decipher. Only this time, Mom's messages seem to be leading the twins into danger. Can they uncover the truth in time?

This is another fun mystery adventure from the Spy X series. As usual, it ends on a cliffhanger, and I wish I could read the next book now. Readers who enjoyed the first two books in the series won't want to miss this one and will be eagerly looking forward to the fourth book. I highly recommend this series to kids looking for a fun spy adventure.

Code breaking mind-busting magic!

Peter Lerangis pullsit off again! This book is filled with brain busting codes, traps, secrets, deceptions, and really cool ending.

Andrew and Evie take on the next set of clues sent by their mother in this mysterious book. But all is not what it seems. Now the twins are in danger from the mysterious "Company" and have to avoid company agents. They must hurry to crack the codes to be reunited with Spy X ( Their mother. ). I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope to see many more in this series!

KIDS LOVE IT!!

I am an elementary school teacher. I picked up Spy X #1 on a whim and loved it. I read that book as a read aloud to my class and they were hooked. We have since read Spy X #2 and #3. My class can not get enough. These books make excellent read aloud stories because no matter where you stop for the day the kids are left hanging...they want more! My students are now counting down the days for Spy X #4 to be released. What a wonderful series to get kids excited about reading!!

Just Bought My Uncle's Book -- Finally!

George Rapp is my uncle. The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History had this book in its gift shop when the book was first printed. It was an immediate sell out with every release. I just bought a handful of copies for my siblings and myself. Guess what everyone is getting for Christmas this year!

Grade 4-7–Australian author Andy Griffiths has masterfully written this very humorous piece, read by Stig Wemyss. Griffiths, whose story is told in first person, chronicles a series of practical jokes, including episodes that involve fake vomit, dog poo, and bananas, among other things. In one story, Griffith tells of delivering a Gorilla-gram and, while dressed as a gorilla, stopping to observe restaurant goers, mocking them much like people do with gorillas in a zoo. He not only mimics their actions, he "moons" them when he is shooed away, carrying his gorilla antics a bit too far. The police show up, believing that he is a real gorilla, and attempt to subdue him and return him to the zoo. Most of Griffith's antics backfire on him, and the anticipation is appropriately written into the story. The decidedly Australian flair in both the writing and reading of this title adds to the sense of adventure. Music and sound effects are sprinkled throughout. This book will be prankster heaven for upper elementary and middle school students, particularly boys. This must have been one of the funniest books I've ever read. It has different stories about Andy Griffiths when he was a kid. All stories are about Andy playing practical jokes on his parents, his friends, and total strangers. You won't know what's funny until you've read Just Joking. It is extremely hilarious. One of the main reasons I liked this book is how fast it is. There wasn't a part in the book where I was bored. Andy Griffiths sure knows how to keep the reader just wanting to keep on reading. Just Joking is also a very easy book to read.

I liked Just Joking because it was very, very funny. It's a whole bunch of very, very silly stories. He plays very good pranks on people, only most times he gets in trouble. One of the funny parts was when he wanted a milkshake, he wanted a chocolate milkshake, but instead of chocolate syrup, they used slugs! If you like practical jokes, this would be a completely excellent book for you. I would totally recommend this book.

Have you ever looked for a book that kills you with laughter? Well, here is your answer. Just joking is a book by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton. The mission of this book is just plainly making you get a heart attack (of laughter). In the book every chapter has a different joke. It is not a normal book of jokes but it is a story in which the character does the jokes. Read it!!!!
