Not Just Social Studies Activities!

I teach fifth grade, and my students had gotten bored with the same social studies activities. Then I stumbled across this book. This book's activites teach more than just social studies skills. Math, art and creative writing are part of a number of these lessons.
My students have enjoyed making historical biography paper dolls. This activity has students make paper dolls with clothes that would be appropriate for the time in history being studied. Then they write a brief biography about their doll describing the doll's daily live experiences.
Another popular activity was 'I won!'. Each student wins an imaginary $10,000 trip for two. Students can choose where they want to go. Then research how much their trip will cost and create a budget.
With activites like these, I don't dread teaching social studies any more!

Social Studies Activities Kids Can't Resist: 40 Sensational

This book contains a wide variety of activities that will make social studies fun. I love the materials list for each activity and the authors created templates or gave examples for all of the projects. While the title states there are 40 ideas, the "alternative activities" sections easily double that number. The ideas are open-ended and teachers will find a million ways to use these easy-to-follow ideas. Any elementary teacher who needs to add sparkle to a lesson will find this book a great investment!

A wonderful resource

It can be difficult to think of new and creative ideas when teaching students fulltime. Yet, when you have resources like this book, you have a place to look for creative ideas. This book is a wonderful resource for teachers who want their children to learn through personal experience.
I highly recommend this book for classroom teachers.

A series of multiethnic children goes on to bless toys, self and so on, ending with "Bless the children everywhere." God stays unnamed, which allows parents to decide how to adapt the verse to their own spiritual practices and leanings. Another distinctive aspect of this book is the author and artist's embrace of a childlike perspective: the blessing conferred on "the family/ in its house" is depicted in terms of a happy girl looking into a well-populated dollhouse. The warmly lit watercolors are scaled to show children large on the page, creating intimacy and implying the child's sovereignty over his or her small world. And with no more than six words per spread, even youngest members of the target audience will find it easy to commit the verse to memory. Ages 2-6.

Williams' winsome illustrations, evidently crayon drawings with watercolor washes, show a series of children in their homes as they play and prepare for bed. Focusing on more than one child allows girls and boys of different races to be featured, while the verse and the style of illustration provide continuity. Perfect prayer for a toddler

So many prayer or Bible story books are either too complex for a toddler or watered down so much that they are almost meaningless. This is a perfect book for a toddler. The view of the world through a toddler's eyes is consistent and delightful: "Bless the moon, Bless the stars, Bless my night-light, Bless my cars...Bless my pillow, Bless my bed, Bless me, too, from toes to head..." The illustrations are simple, warm and in keeping with the viewpoint. Highly recommended! Perfect for a Christian baptism gift, but I think it is probably appropriate for other faiths, too.

Simple, beautiful, engaging

This is one of the best books I purchased for my toddler thus far. It has stunning illustrations; the material is simple and useful - I learned a lot about lady bugs, which I didn't know. And let's face it, what kid doesn't love those critters?

Ladybugs and other insects

I mostly bought the book for the life cycle of the ladybug. I was teaching summer camp (ages 6-8) and needed something with large, simple, colorful pictures and this book fit the bill. The Children LOVED the overlays & enjoyed looking at the pictures. It is not what I would call a "baby book". If the explination is too simple then show the pictures and elaborate. Great little book! After reading the ladybug section we went outside & released ladybugs! What a day!

Grade 7-10–When a fire engulfs Sandoni Brothers Hosiery and Fine Apparel in Hamlin, NY, it is assumed that Lucretia Sandoni, 18, died in the blaze. She has grown up with this family for 17 years–ever since Rocco won a Buick in a poker game, not knowing that a child was asleep in the backseat. She has been groomed by her three aging uncles–Onofrio, Frank, and Rocco–to take care of their needs before the aunts all pass on. As the building is engulfed in flames, the teen sees this as a way to escape her restrictive life. She becomes Lucy Buick and gets on a train with the intent of finding the Buicks. During the journey, she meets Brian, a young man who lives in Gardenia, IA, and she decides to stop there. Lila, owner of Lila's Motor Lodge, offers her a place to stay. Rhodi, Lucy's favorite aunt, re-emerges at different points. She is a firm believer in signs, and constantly reminds Lucy to follow her own path and do what will make her happy. A counterpoint comes from the other aunts, who converge on her en masse to give conflicting advice. The teen's transition from the scared and uncertain Lucretia Sandoni to the strong, independent Lucy Buick who experiences life's ups and downs, and friendship, is beautifully done. *Starred Review* Gr. 8-11. Eighteen years ago, Rocco Sandoni, won a Buick in a poker game; in the backseat was a baby girl. Little Lucy's new family consisted of five great-aunts and three uncles--all overprotective, except for eccentric great-aunt Rhodi, who plants the idea that someday Lucy will find her real family, whom Lucy names the Buicks. The aunts die, and Lucy knows she must leave, especially since her uncles want to marry her off. A timely fire allows her to make her exit seem like her death, and she travels by train from New York to Gardenia, Iowa, where she meets a delicious group of quirky characters, including a storm chaser who wants to lasso her heart. Some of the plotting is plodding, and the message (that a family is who you love) blares louder than the train's whistle. What wins the day are the people in Lucy's life, living and dead (the aunts make frequent appearances), who pop off the pages, and Murphy's voice (similar to Polly Horvath's but less arch), which tells the story with a steadfastness and sweetness. Full of lots of love, this is also a fine romance. Ilene Cooper

Stunning

I found "Looking for Lucy Buick" randomly in my school library, and found it to be amazing. The storyline has you falling in love with each of the characters very quickly. "Looking for Lucy Buick" is a story of self-finding. She wants to find out who she really is, and while she tells her story, you begin to start finding yourself as well. This book is funny, and cute, and heartwarming, and everything in between. Heck, it might even make you cry a little! I recommended this to anybody and everybody who loves to read, and who would appreciate and give this book a chance. So, why are you still reading this? Go and see for yourself!

I just love this book, it's hard to put down! It's simple and fresh with just the right amount of everything; mystery, romance and suspense. It's not a big book and makes it nice little read. The author does a great job of never bogging her audience down with boring details and pitiful hardships that so many novels seem to do. I can't wait to read her other books!
