True story of predatory behavior on the road.

Anybody who travels abroad solo or with friends should read this book. We always read warnings about places we visit. However, I never read warnings about our fellow travelers on the road. There are predators amongst us travelers as well, and "Serpentine" points this out in detail. Serpentine was also a traveler who preyed on other travelers. I couldn't put this book down.

The book I remembered

I had read this book in the early 1970's and it stuck with me all these years. I not nearly as fascinated with it this time, but possibly because I already knew how it was going to go. It is still an interesting read about a very unusual individual and the lengths he went to for the life he was always searching for. *S*

Old book GREAT book

I was just browsing for a used copy of this book because I never like to be without one to lend. This is one of my favorite books of all time. It is basically "true crime" and written in the style of a novel. If you like this genre, you won't be able to put this book down.

Interesting poses but would like to see more models

I happen to like the fact these are in black and white, since the simplicity of it makes you familiar with the form. I already have The Nude Figure for my other references for life drawing. As another person said, this is not the best book to get reference for illustrative foreshortening. This book is more to train your eye to capture various parts of the form in foreshortening.

I thought it was interesting how the author noted that it was difficult these days to find models because of people's need to do body alternations like piercings and tattoos.

While I find the models average, I would have liked to seen a few different models like overweight or even more athletic to get variations of the form in perspective. I wouldn't even mind old people, but I'm not sure if the elderly could perform in some of those poses.

Most of the poses are in seated or lying down positions, I remember the author saying also that a lot of poses even in perspective started looking the same.

I got some use out of the book, for the photography was clear enough for me. I also like using it as an exercise to recognize the form, like certain muscle and bone groups would look like in certain perspectives. I think too many people want to copy and not understand the true value of learning and utilizing reference.

It's not an AMAZING book, but it's still useful.

This book is a valuable tool for drawing and understanding human bodies. I actually used it a lot. It's worth the price. (But there arent any shots of standing people from the top).

Truth in advertising

I saw a copy of this book for all of about 5 minutes before I
knew this was it for demonstrating foreshortening in figure drawing.
I have not had much time to spend with the book in the interim, but I
fully believe it will stand up to it's promise.

It was a cutout book simply subtitled: A Book for Children. In it, the pictures and verse about bugs, butterflies, and mice really came to life." That got him drawing and writing. Before that he made children's toys by hand. "I love making stories. The bookmaking process is a liberation for me from the years I toiled to produce handmade items. The BEST Miss Spider Book!

My 4 year old wants me to read this book EVERY night. She's memorized almost all the words and LOVES to finish the rhymes. Squirt learns he can pursue a noble goal - finding the mother of the egg - through lots of dangers. Parents are reassured that they ARE teaching their children to be "brave and good". One of my favorite books... I'll be setting it aside in my kids' "memory boxes" for them to read to their children, and I'm buying more copies for Christmas gifts this year.

I'd call it a classic!

I've been reading this book to my daughter since she was 6 months old. She loves all of the Miss Spider books. It could be the great colors or the wonderful rhymes. Maybe it's because I adore it too! The best thing about this particular book is the fact that Miss Spider adopts babies who are not spiders. I think teaching kids that loving families don't all look alike is a powerful message. It's never too early to start those good messages.

 Karish was never meant to be the Duke. His older brother had had the title, and from what I learned had been thrilled to indulge in the aristocratic lifestyle, but he’d ruined everyone’s expectations by dying before marrying or having children. That left it to his mother, the Dowager Duchess, to choose the new titleholder. For some reason, she’d chosen her second son, the Source she’d been happy to send away to the academy, the son who’d never had a moment of training in the duties of being a titleholder and a landlord, when there were several more qualified cousins clambering to take the title.
 Karish hadn’t wanted the title, for which I’d be forever grateful. He couldn’t be both a Source and a Duke, with all the Duke’s responsibilities. If he had taken the title, he wouldn’t have been able to work as a Source, which would mean he’d have no use for me. Bonded to him, I wouldn’t be able to work with any other Source. I would have been left with nothing to do.
 Karish pulled back and straightened his shoulders. “The Empress obviously misunderstands the gravity of the situation and merely needs instruction.”
 “And the fact that pursuing the title could get you hanged, what about that?”
 “That’s just the law. What is the law to her?”
 Marvelous. The blasted woman was going to get us both killed.

Something wasn't quite right

Okay, I liked the book and the writing was good. I've read the first one and enjoyed it and was looking forward to this one for months. I wanted to get that out of the way before I started nitpicking.

I wouldn't say I was disappointed, exactly, but something was wrong with the "ending" and I can't put my finger on it. One reviewer said that it was more like "the ongoing adventures of..." and maybe that's it. This felt more like a middle book in a series instead of standing on it's own. It just didn't feel like an ending, I guess. More like a "stay tuned for the next installment". Yes, I know it's a series, but I felt I was left hanging, like maybe this was just a setup book for the next one.

The other problem I'm having is the POV. It would be nice to get a chapter or two on what someone else (Taro, anybody?) is thinking or how they see events. Frankly, I'm getting a bit tired of Lee doing all the narration. I'd like to see what someone else is thinking and how they see some things that Lee is experiencing.

In the beginning of the book, Lee and Taro act like lovers, but for the rest of the book they're more or less acting like really good friends. It was a bit confusing because their relationship was looking as if it progressed, then it went back to "I like you, but that's all" without explanation. It was... odd.

Okay, I nitpicked. But only because I was expecting better. I'll still be waiting on the third one since I've read the other two but despite the sound of this review, I do like the books (I gave it 4 stars, didn't I?). They're very light and entertaining and the writing is good. This second book has it's moments too, it's just that I'm a little disappointed.

Like another reviewer said, read Resenting the Hero first. If you like it, you'll probably like this one too.

Great series and I hope it continues. Taro and Lee are real and likable. The humor is understated but intrinsic to the characters themselves. So far this series has proved to be a true "needle in the haystack" a rare find among all the clutter the publishers throw at us. Bravo!
