Grade 2-4-Nine-year-old Joshua continues his account of his family's move to Oregon begun in Westward to Home (2001) and continued in A Perfect Place (2002, both Scholastic). Wild Year covers frontier living in the Willamette Valley and, unusual for a beginning chapter book, the establishment of territorial government. These details of frontier life may not be as "wild" as the title implies, especially after the previous trials and tribulations on the Oregon Trail. Yet the promise of going to school for the first time after the long journey, the safe return of a lost younger sister, and the prospect of adding two orphans to the McCullough family will hold readers' interest, especially if they have read the earlier titles. Despite the diary format, Hermes creates a smooth, economical narrative that is supplemented with a brief historical endnote.

Predicting the Best

I have read the first diary of Joshua three times, the second one twice. I am about to read the third one, which is this one and I KNOW it will be good. I would also recommend other Dear America books and other books by Patricia Hermes to anybody. They make a realistic fictional person from the colonial times and describes how they feel while telling a conflict at the same time. I've already read seven Dear America Books. I liked every single one of them. And I know this will also be great, too.

The topics in this section include microphone sensitivity and noise rating, analysis of directional properties, stereo microphone array characteristics, proximity effects, and boundary conditions. D. Gr 5-9-A lively novel told through vignettes about growing up in Nuevo Pe-itas, TX. American-born Rey and his loving family maintain close ties with their Mexican relatives, who live "a stone's throw" away across the border, yet have very different opportunities. Rey's family, though poor, struggles and survives through their kind and honest efforts, religious beliefs, and hard work. Just entering adolescence, Rey yearns to be a man like his father, uncles, and older male cousins. The boys of the barrio play marbles and "king of the mountain," climb trees, and collect cigarette butts. The title comes from one of the boys' challenges: to jump from the upper branches of a mammoth mesquite to another without falling. Unfortunately, Rey is the youngest and his legs are short. Predictably, he falls, and he ends up with a broken wrist. The writing is engaging and accessible, with Spanish-language phrases and names smoothly integrated throughout. Loosely tied together, the chapters create a cohesive whole. Rey is an appealing protagonist who will speak to early adolescents. Salda-a draws extended family together and binds one boy's growth into manhood with real emotion and believable events.

Gr. 7-12.Although labeled a novel, The Jumping Tree reads like a collection of related short stories that follow Rey Castanada from sixth through eighth grade. Rey easily crosses the border to visit family in Mexico. But he begins to question the authority of the border police and the sanitized history in his textbook, as he learns about civil disobedience. Wavering between childhood and glimmers of adult life, he plays rough, little-kid games with his friends, stumbles into his first romantic relationships, and loses his best friend to drugs and crime. Always, Rey tries to figure out what it means to be a man, looking to his tough, loving father as his model. With lots of self-deprecating humor and an air of reminiscence, Saldana's lively, poignant work asks universal questions while remaining culturally specific, filled with Chicano language and customs. Contemporary, subtle, and real, both titles will find a place in literature and creative-writing classes, and for readers' personal interest. Gillian Engberg

René's got it! Dale gas!

René Saldaña's The Jumping Tree tells the story of Rey Castañeda, a boy growing up in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, where I am from. This is one genuine book. The things Rey and his friends do in this book are the same kinds of things I did with my cousins and friends growing up. With a style that actually made me laugh out loud, René writes about playing King of the Mountain, throwing pretend grenades at each other and jumping down from a tree to try and catch a branch. He does a superb job of showing readers that most Mexican kids' games are based on proving your friend is a bigger "chicken" than you are. He also has a great ear for South Texas slang. You read what these characters say to each other and you are transported. If you're from the Valley you're hearing your friends or cousins talking to you all over again. If you're not, you're given a rare opportunity to visit a wonderful place that is full of hilarious people with great stories to tell. I plan to use this one in the classroom as an engaging read-aloud. I look forward to reading more from this promising young author. You got it, René! Dale gas!

i am a 6th grade student from Burlington, Washington. I am writing a book review for the jumping tree

The Jumping Tree is a book about a boy named Rey. He is a Mexican. When he was little, he had an earthquake in his home. His house got ruined and now half of his famaly moved to south texas to nuevo penitas and the other half to mexico about fifty miles away.

His family finds a home and these other bigger kids there start to bully him. But a kid named Chuy helps him. Now he must face the trubles of becoming a man. He has to decide to smoke or not to and is running from the cops and even goes to a funeral. This is an action packed book that I recommend to kids 9 years of age to 14 years of age .

a fun read

Saldana does a wonderful job chronicling the life of a Chicano boy growing up in a Texas border town through lively and entertaining episodes that richly exhibit the world inhabited by Rey Casteneda and his family. Rey is a good boy with a supportive family who help him to overcome the crises and problems that arise when trying to straddle two cultures that are often at odds with each other. What Saldana does best in this book is portray Rey's sense of joy and pride with himself, his family, and especially with his father.

The 10-year-old girls have always relished their twinship: making it impossible for people to tell them apart, working out signals so they can pretend to sneeze simultaneously, toss their braids in perfect synchronization, etc. At least, Ruby has always loved it?but then she's the dominant, extroverted one. Garnet seems to have been going along for the ride, safe in Ruby's shadow. When the twins' lives begin to change?a new girlfriend for their father, and then a new job in a new town with the corresponding new school for his daughters?their relationship is suddenly ripe for examination. When Ruby persuades her to audition for a TV series, Garnet rises to the occasion but is paralyzed with fear and subsequently guilt-ridden to have spoiled Ruby's chance at stardom. Next, Ruby plots their escape from home by applying to boarding school, but only Garnet passes the entrance exam. In the throes of making the decision to attend, she finds inner strength, and in finally acknowledging her twin's separate identity, Ruby affirms her love. Though the twins' voices are not always clearly differentiated as to vocabulary and style, their characters and interests are consistently distinct. Gr. 3^-6. Ruby and Garnet are identical on the outside but quite different on the inside, as their entries in their combined journal show. Ruby is the bossy, confident one; Garnet the meeker, always ready to follow Ruby's lead. But neither of the British 10-year-olds is happy when their father decides to move the family to a country village to open a bookshop with his girlfriend, Rose--Rosey Ratbag to the twins. This is a book that gets it all right. Ruby and Garnet are characters with whom readers will identify, for everyone has been either the leader or the follower in a relationship. Kids will also recognize the anger that rises in the girls when they are forced to leave all that's familiar to them to move somewhere they don't want to go with someone they don't want to be with. On the other hand, youngsters will also comprehend Rose's frustrations as she tries every way she knows to get through to the unfriendly, unhappy girls. But this is not just a story of familial angst. It is also very, very funny. The clever design interposes the often laugh-aloud journal entries with sharp ink drawings that capture emotions with economy of line. (The obviously redone-for-an-American-audience dust jacket is the only misstep--too sweet.) Recommend the tale to kids who like Cleary--Wilson, too, knows how to mix messages with plenty of fun. Not the greatest children's book out there..

Twins Ruby and Garnet are annoyed to find out that not only do they have to move house, and leave their Gran, but that their dad has a new girlfriend - Rose! Ruby is determined to get rid of Rose and even encourages twin Garnet to join in her vendetta. Also with a determination to become famous Ruby follows a TV advert to be part of a TV serial. Garnet wanting to please her sister does everything she can. Can both girls do what they want with their life but still remain on good terms?

This wasn't that good a book. I know I'm not in the intended age group but even my niece, whom I read it too, didn't think it was that good either. The storyline of the story didn't seem to flow that well and overall it was duller than it was entertaining.

The characters didn't seem to have their own personality and eventually reading the book started to become more of a chore than something of enjoyment.

Ruby just grated on me her whole personality was irritating. Garnet was far too much of a push over and always eager to please - brown-noser comes to mind.

Overall this book was a bit of a disappointment. It just wasn't something I was expecting from a children's book.

This is one of my favorite books!!

I read a book called Double Act. This was one of the best books that I have ever read. It was funny, adventurous, and very much like real life. It was adventurous because the two main characters, Ruby and Garnet, who are identical twins, ask their dad (their mom is dead) if they can audition for a twin commercial, but he says no. Regardless of this, they go to New York and audition. It was funny because their dad met someone that they hate and they do funny things like confuse her, throw-up on her, etc. This is realistic because she made these two characters act how real twins act-I would know because I have a twin sister. Jacqueline wilson has a very unique writing style. she uses cliffhangers,and writes in a way that there is never a part whereit isn't interesting, boring or obvious. this is a book that you just can't put down! When you come acorss a book well-written, like this one, you say, "Mom, just let me finish this chapter I have just one more page to finish!" You really have three, but anything to read more of it! I suggest this book to anyone who like funny, adventurous, and realistic books.

You wanna know why this book is so great? Well, you'll just have to read it - but I will tell you a little bit.

This book you are about to order (maybe) Is about identical twins with totally different personalities. Ruby is outgoing and playful, while Garnet is quiet and shy. When their mother dies and gets replaced by frizzy dizzy Rose, they have to team up and stand up against the family.

You're still wondering why this book is so good right? Well, the reason why I rated this book 5 stars is because it is so organized and if you read it, it'll hook you, making you want to read more, more, more: until you finish and complain that there is no sequel to it.
