Very nice!

This is a wonderful book about gymnastics. It has lots of pictures. It's about a 10 year old gymnast who has aspirations to be in the olympics. It shows how she trains. The pictures are in black & white. Not only does it contains pictures of her, but also other gymnasts are here also. Nadia, Bart Conner & Kurt Thomas and more.

First published in 1978, it's a little dated-but it shows gymnastics as it once was. Very nice!

Great book

This book is charming. And to those who think this generations gymnasts don't know who Nadia or Olga are then you guys haven't been to many gym clubs lately-the best often have posters of the great Nadia Comaneci, the first gymnast in history to score a perfect ten at the Olympics (the newest Olympic Champion Carly Patterson, and her peers have all talked about Nadia in interviews for any who have followed gymnastics on tv these past four years.) Just like most sports fanatics gymnasts do their homework and todays gymnasts including myself DO know who Nadia and Olga were. Just like baseball fans know who Babe Ruth was, and so on. Those two great legends are a part of gym lore.

This book is supposed to be written from the point of view of the ten year old gymnast and the language is realistic and overall the book is lots of fun.

Very Nostalgic!

I got this book when I was 10 years old. Every once in a while I take it out again and look at it. While it may be "dated" in some sense such as going to see Nadia and Olga, and the equipment - note the WOODEN Balance Beam! :) It is still a good narrative of what a gymnast goes through. The fact that younger gymnasts may not know who Nadia and Olga are is quite amazing and perhaps this is a good read for those tikes who think that gymnastics started with Shannon Miller! :) A great read for older gymnasts looking back on the "good old days" and young gymnasts who never knew that there was anything but spring floors and padded beams.

Grade 3–5—The eclectic group of people featured here includes figures from the distant past (Jesus of Nazareth) as well as contemporary people (Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi). Some, like Martin Luther King, Jr. are famous, while others, such as Abdul Ghaffar Khan, are obscure. These diverse individuals are united thematically in that each chose a path in life to help others through nonviolent means, often at great personal risk, and often paying the ultimate price. These are important and inspirational figures, but the book is heavily message-driven, with Winter often oversimplifying or offering opinions as facts. When speaking of Sojourner Truth, he states that she preached "what she knew to be the truth against slavery and the racism that caused slavery to happen." Many other factors also led to the rise of slavery in the U.S. Stating that "most people in other countries think that America has done more harm than good in Iraq" is not backed up by any references to respected reporting agencies. In fact, no sources are supplied for any of the information or thoughts and feelings attributed to these people. The book's design also contributes to the heavy-handed approach, with words such as "sacrifice" and "risk" appearing in an inch-tall font at the top or bottom of the pages. Addy's oil and collage paintings have a burnished look to them, and would have been even more powerful without the distracting lettering. Beautiful!

I already owned a copy at home, but I love it so much I ordered it as a gift for my daughter's teacher. This is a great book to get for anyone. The illustrations are beautiful, and Mr. Winter's books are all great. He writes in a way that kids can easily understand and enjoy even with the most serious subjects.

Excellent book!

Yes, excellent book. As a Christian, I appreciated the way Jonah Winters wrote about Jesus. Very honest and sensitive to non Christians. I will use this book with my students to teach about real people who have made a difference in the world. Then we will seek out and celebrate our own home town peaceful heroes!

Fun practice of skills

I had planned to wait on doing more formal language arts until my daughter got a little older. After all, while she was a good reader, she was still quite young, and most grammar books required a lot of writing.

Then, she found the Grammar book in this series at a local teachers store, and was sold. Within a week, I was ordering the rest of the series. The fun stories, introducing punctuation marks, spelling strategies, vocabulary strategies, and parts of speech were just what she needed.

If one author has really made an impression on my 3 yr old son it is Jerry Palotta. His books are informative, funny, easily digestible and most have fantastic illustrations.
