Good Display - Boring CD

The flip chart is useful for chants/songs with class. Children did not enjoy the CD that accompanied the sing-along chart, however. The musical style and quality was not catchy enough to grasp the children's attention. Was very disappointed, considering the set came from a reputable company.

I LOVE this circle time chart. The first couple times I didn't know what I thought, but now I love it! I ordered another one that focused on shapes and colors and we have yet to finish the entire thing. Not catchy at all. The kids all love this one and this provides a lot of opportunity for moving and dancing.

This is THE definitive book on both Pacific and Atlantic

If you have any serious interest in shells or mollusks, get this book. The second edition, published in 1974, is much better than the first. It is chock-full of excellent identifying information, as well as micro-environmental preferences of each animal. Kudos, Dr. Abbott!

American Seashells, a classic

R. Tucker Abbott wrote two editions of the American Seashells. The first one is good, the second vastly better; that is much more comprehensive. This volume has been out-of-print for years. It is still the standard with some exceptions. If you need to identify west coast marine bivalves, then Coan, Valentich-Scott, and Bernard's "Bivalve Seashells of Western North America (2000: Alaska to Baja)is the standard. A similar work, by a different author, is in preparation for marine gastropods. Last word was that it would be three volumes.

Despite these works, Abbott, 1974 is still the the book to have.

A Classic Text

I have had a copy of this book for the better part of 35 years and it is always my 'go to' book for seashell identification. Be careful and make sure you get the second edition as noted by others. That is not to say that there are some issues; there are. What I have always appreciated about this book is that the taxa is laid out using Linneaus classification (Class, Order, Family, Genus, etc.) and it sets into superfamilies, suborders, etc. As you can imagine a book as old as this one does run into significant name changes and in some cases movement of whole families. That notwithstanding it is still THE definitive text for North America (and the Caribbean for that matter). What is more, unlike most any other text of its size, Abbott teaches us about the natural habitat of the mollusks as well as listing distribution of the organism. I cannot imagine being a seashell enthusiast and not owning this book. Written by one of the two super-giants of Conchology, R. Tucker Abbotts legacy lives on in this work. With so much moving to internet resources it maybe a long time before anything approaches this text again.

Great book

This book is great for sugar-free recipes. There are a TON to choose from....I have only made one so far (apple turnovers), and I am very excited to try more.

The recipes usually use healthier things like whole-wheat flour, which I really enjoyed. I also really like that after each recipe, the author tells you the calorie count and other nutritional information about the recipe (as well as diabetic exchanges).

The recipe that I tried tasted fantastic, and as I said, I am excited to try more. The book contains a very wide variety of recipes. I am a very picky person, but I found at least 15 that I plan to try at some point.

This old English ghost storyabout the teeny tiny woman who found a teeny tiny bone and took it home to make souphas been retold, almost identically (and with almost an identical titleTeeny Tiny Woman, by Barbara Seuling, Paul Galdone and others, and now by Bennett. The rhythmic words are wonderful for reading aloud, and the story builds as the voice from the cupboards repeats, each time slightly louder, "Give me my bone!" DePaola's illustrations are colorful, cheerful and childlike, but a bit static, and lack both the eeriness and expressiveness of Galdone's pictures and the teeny tiny coziness of Seuling's artwork. Wide-eyed ghosts follow the teeny tiny woman around, from the first pages to the moment when one of them snatches back his bone, but these don't impart any new meaning to the story. In fact, it would make more sense if they started following her after she picks up the bonewhy before? This version is mostly for dePaola fans.

PreSchool-Grade 1 DePaola has given a fresh new look to this old, gently shivery English folk tale. In familiar heavy-lined drawings, brightly colored with transparent inks on rich ivory paper, his teeny tiny woman expresses emotions from delight to terror with her simple dot eyes and flat features. Bennett's retelling closely follows that in Joseph Jacobs' 1898 collection English Fairy Tales (Dover), regrettably changing bonnet to hat, but otherwise changes are minor as the teeny tiny woman finds the teeny tiny bone, puts it in her teeny tiny cupboard and finally surrenders it to its rightful owner. Unfortunately, there are no objects in the illustrations with which to compare the teeny tininess of the woman as there are in Barbara Seuling's version (Viking, 1976). However, dePaola adds ghosts and splendid bright colors in his pictures. It's hard to compare dePaola's interpretation with Paul Galdone's (Clarion, 1984) for his drawings are as typically Galdone as dePaola's are dePaola. Classic ghost story

This is a classic English ghost story, in the vein of "The Golden Arm", where eventually you end up screaming at your unsuspecting vict- uh, child.

Great fun, not much more to it than that. If you want to read the story beforehand you can look it up on google.

strange tale of cannibalism

this is a very strange story. I found myself furrowing my brow while reading it to my daughter and thinking to myself, " is this about what i think it is about?" Yes it is indeed, this is a story of a woman who takes a bone from a graveyard to make soup with it and then the ghost of the person who's bone it was comes to haunt her. I don't come from a theistic perspective but I still think the cannibalistic theme is a "teeny tiny" bit strange in a children's story! Silence of the lambs for kids. :-)
