New Orleans Attorney Tubby Dubonnet is getting tired of his slow-moving, indolent city--with all its dirt and dancing, its colorful characters and corruption. For Tubby, a change of scenery might be in order, until a moralistic crusading prosecutor tries to destroy the career and reputation of Tubby's favorite judge.

Suddenly Tubby has a good reason to get out of bed in the morning. Because a little matter of office sex has turned into a nasty mystery of murder, rape, and suicide, real and imagined. And with more than a fair share of femmes fatales around him, and some dangerous criminals masquerading as reputable businessmen, Tubby suddenly has a lot more to do than avoid his next bottle and plot his next meal: he needs a lucky break--just to stay alive....

The plot is written okay, it never grabbed my complete attention. There was way too much sex, swearing and crude words for me. I did not finish it.

From Booklist
The author of numerous series nonfiction and other titles here offers a collection of short stories highlighting all things paranormal. Using the persona of 12-year-old Internet-geek Jason Specter, Teitelbaum presents narratives for each of the 50 states that he says were offered to him by visitors to his blog. Tales range from an Alaska wildlife photographer being chased by an angry Bigfoot, to a young Indiana girl haunting the covered bridge where she lost her life, to a UFO landing in an Iowa crop circle. Some, like "The Hitchhiker," from Alabama, will be familiar to urban-legend aficionados. Many accounts lean toward the grisly (including knife slashings and maggot-filled bodies), but other anecdotes draw attention to gentle apparitions trying to do good deeds for their loved ones. Give this to fans of Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series; computer-savvy readers will also want to check out the book's Web site, which includes excerpts from the text. Weisman, Kay

About the Author
Michael Teitelbaum has always had an interest in the paranormal, despite a rather normal childhood growing up in Brooklyn, New York. These days, Michael and his wife, Sheleigah, split their time between New York City and their (as yet unhaunted) 170-year-old farmhouse in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too
By TeensReadToo
THE SCARY STATES OF AMERICA is a collection of 50 short stories, one for each state, about paranormal experiences ranging from ghosts and supernatural creatures to aliens and crop circles. The stories are framed by the narrative of Jason Specter, a 12-year-old collector of all things scary and bizarre. Though presented as "true" stories from readers Jason has reached through his website, both the character of Jason and the stories are fictional, though the cover notes they are "based on true events."

The variety of the stories is what makes them most appealing. Some are standard fare: the hitchhiking ghost, the aliens who kidnap people to run invasive tests on them. Many, however, are unusual takes on the familiar, like the vicious Bigfoot a bear photographer runs into and the heartbroken ghost haunting a toy store, or unique creatures and tales which will be new to most readers, like those of the skunk ape and the shadow people. Part of the enjoyment is in wondering how much of each story might really have happened, and what you would do in similar situations.

Be warned: many of the stories are quite scary, and some rather graphic when it comes to blood and gore. Many times the teller of the tale barely survives to tell about it, and some have come out of it quite a bit worse for wear. The most exciting stories are those in which Jason plays a direct part, often risking life and limb. Readers will appreciate his skeptical yet open-minded approach.

Though those hoping to catch a glimpse into real recorded paranormal events will have to look elsewhere, this book will make a fun read for those who simply like a good scare. Bring it along to your next campfire or sleepover and read a few aloud in the dark. Chills are guaranteed!

Booga Booga
By E. R. Bird
I bet you could have a lot of fun if you gathered a group of children's librarians together and asked them which requests they get the most from kids. You'd have the standard boring answers like, "mysteries" or "books like Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants". There would also be the weird answers like, "samurais" and "anything that takes place in Barbados". I'd bet good money that some of the answers would be a mix of both, though. For example, it couldn't have been a month ago when a kid came up to me asking for a book involving aliens. "Do you want real aliens or stories about them?" I asked. The kid wavered a bit, and that was when I knew what book I could have recommended right then and there (had it been on my shelf and available). "The Scary States of America" by Michael Teitelbaum is the title to hand to any kid who wonders where on earth they can find some good old-fashioned scary stories. There's only so many times you can hand someone a copy of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark before they start getting bored. Teitelbaum's book is certainly bereft of creepy pictures, but the images that pop up in this bit of kiddie horror will undoubtedly stay in your mind much longer than you initially anticipated. Hand this out to kids looking for tales of the strange, wild, and weird, but be sure they can handle the spooks (not to mention gore). There's something for everyone in this book.

Here's the concept: There are fifty states in America and for each one our hero, Jason Specter, has collected a spooky tale. Jason is the creator of a very popular blog chronicling every possible supernatural event he can get his hands on. Jason used to be just your average kid, until a close encounter with someone sad and incredibly dead brought the wider weirder world out there to his personal attention. Thanks to his friends in all fifty states, this is a compilation of one story per state. Sometimes these stories involve creatures native only to certain areas. The Skunk Ape of Florida or the Jersey Devil of... well, New Jersey. For other states you'll just hear about ghosts, alien encounters, and other paranormal phenomena of varying levels of danger. Some stories end happily. Some most definitely do not. In the end, Jason encourages his readers to contribute their own scary tales to his website. In the meantime, he asks that people keep their eyes and minds wide open.

First of all, Mr. Teitelbaum has done his research. I was unaware of the existence of such fiends as that moth creature some people believe in or the shadow people. That doesn't mean that there haven't been stories about them before, of course. I just hadn't been aware of some of the regional rumors out there. Of the creatures I acutally had heard of, Teitelbaum knows the rules. For example, when you come across a night marcher in Oahu, it is best to close your eyes and never look at them. That's a given. Having to find 50 regional creepy critters for each and every state can be a bit daunting though, so the author dips into alien abduction tales as well as other mysterious goings on. Basically everything from your classic ghosts, werewolves, and witches meld with the less common bleeding houses and lizard men.

Each section begins with a real world fact under the heading, "What I learned in history class". Following that is a piece of information on the state being discussed. Things like, "The rocket used by Apollo 13 was designed, built, and tested at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama." I was disappointed to find that the scary story following this fact under the heading "A story you won't find in your textbook" didn't relate to this fact in the least. If the Alabama fact was about space travel, I figured the story would be about aliens or interplanetary connections. Instead it was that old Hitchhiker urban legend. It would have been neat to link the two together, I think. Ditto the Massachusetts history mention of the Salem Witch Trials. No witches to be seen in that little section and this is a pity. It would have made for a nice tie-in.

And of course, the difficulty that comes with taking regional mysteries is that they can sometimes sound familiar. In chronicling an escape from a Skunk Ape in Florida, it's difficult not to see parallels with someone else's encounter with Bigfoot in Alaska. Or how one ghost story mirrors another, in spite of changes in place and name. Almost all the stories are compelling in some way, though. Considering how short they are (rarely longer than ten pages), it's impressive that Teitelbaum is able to work in as much as he can within such limited space.

Urban legends never die. They just morph into children's books. Consider pairing this book with the compelling title Tales of the Cryptids: Mysterious Creatures That May or May Not Exist. Both books deal with otherworldly creatures. One just has the benefits of fiction on its side. Plus, with the sheer length of this book on hand, you can bet that this will keep any kid satisfied and terrified for many long car rides to come. A book that fulfills a need.

Frightful Fun
By Dianne Finger
Do you remember as a child the heart pounding anticipation with which you sat through an episode of the "Twighlight Zone", or "The Outer Limits"? Remember how you couldn't wait for the next week's show? Reading The Scary States of America recreated for me the same feelings--the unease, the suspense, the tingling sensation that crawls up the back of your neck. I thought I'd read this book by meandering from "state to state" but instead I read it from cover to cover. Sharp and well-written, you'll want to make time for your own Scary States Marathon.

RESONANCE
By Dorothy M. Wood
This book is basic to the study of every discipline that depends upon spectroscopy, not so much for the rather good fundamental handling of theory, there are many good books on the subject. My favorite aspect of the book is throughtout its pages and especially its Table 39, rich with experimental results, contains references to seminal works in the field, the starting points of the study of a vast array of subjects in the basic sciences and a singular reference of my work in the study of diatomics.

A timeless masterpiece
By Charles-É. Nadeau (charlesnadeau@hotmail.com)
That set of books is absolutely indispensable to any serious physicist doing research in molecular spectroscopy. I used these books for two courses in molecular spectroscopy and they are really going deep in the subject. The only "downside" is that the references given are not really up-to-date but they are still classics in the field.

Douglas Deeds, a fifteen-year-old orphan, keeps a journal of his travels by wagon train as a member of the ill-fated Donner Party, which became stranded in the Sierra Nevada mountains in the winter of 1846-47.

Gr 5-8-"Today I embark on a great journey." This initial, optimistic entry in a 15-year-old orphan's journal exemplifies the Donner Party's hopes for a new and better life in California. Although he knows that James Reed and George Donner lack experience in such an endeavor as a trek west, Deeds believes in the men. He describes the many difficulties encountered on the journey, including river crossings, poor roads, and fear of Native Americans. Little by little, the hardships increase-members of the group die from illness or injury, and the number of wagons dwindles. The decision to use the Hasting "shortcut" proves deadly. Trapped in the snow and facing starvation, the Donner Party is transformed from a group of cooperative and generous people into one plagued by suspicion and selfishness, resorting even to cannibalism (no graphic details). In the epilogue, readers are told that Deeds and his friend Edward Breen were among the first to discover gold in California. Using actual events and characters, this fictional journal brings a tragic story to life, showing the changes in people brought about by incredible hardships. A selection of archival photographs is included.

Gr. 5-7. Using the diary format the My Name Is America series is known for, Philbrick recreates the events of the ill-fated Donner party through the eyes of Douglas Deeds, a 15-year-old orphan. Deeds recounts the jockeying for power between greenhorn organizers George Donner and James Reed; the leaders' dogmatic reliance on a poorly researched travel guide; and the series of bad decisions that culminated in the group's being stranded without food for the winter in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Philbrick shows the action rather than merely telling about it, but he deals discreetly with the issue of cannibalism, sending Douglas off crying into the forest as the others prepare to "take advantage of what has been provided." What has taken place will still be clear to most readers. This is historical fiction that will spark discussions about both ethics and leadership. Kay Weisman

Reading this book will make you think about what's important
By KidsReads
In May 1846, a large wagon train of settlers left Independence, Missouri, heading West. Many Easterners were on the trails at that time, looking for land, business opportunities, and better lives. They traveled across the country in wagon trains to California and Oregon. But the people who headed for California on May 12, 1846, under the leadership of George Donner, did not arrive at their destination safely. Instead, they headed into history.
To readers, the name "The Donner Party" = cannibals. Beset with bad leadership, bad luck, bad timing, and bad decisions, the tragic Donner Party suffered unbelievable hardships. Trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains during a bitter winter, only 60 miles from their destination, the survivors began eating the bodies of those who had died.
THE JOURNAL OF DOUGLAS ALLEN DEEDS tells the story of The Donner Party through the eyes of a boy. Douglas is a 15-year-old orphan moving West to build a life for himself and become somebody. All he has is his horse. Without a wagon or any money to buy one, Douglas is grateful that Mr. Donner lets him hitch his dreams to the wagon train. He can shoot well, and he shares whatever. He becomes good friends with Edward Breen, whose generous family takes him in and makes him feel loved and needed. Douglas and Edward share their plans for making their fortunes when they get to California.
But the settlers don't make good time. They travel only a few miles a day. Months go by, during which other wagon trains arrive at their destinations, but The Donner Party just keeps slogging along the trail. All of them are greenhorns, even the leaders. And they are following the advice in a book written by Mr. Lansford Hastings. Everybody on the wagon train believes Mr. Hastings' book as if it were the Bible. Following his trails and his shortcuts, they ignore the advice of a mountain man who tells them that the trails Hastings took on horseback can't be followed by wagons and oxen. The settlers in the Donner Party believe that it's the mountain man who's lying, and that Mr. Hastings will meet them at Fort Bridger, just as he promised he would, and lead them to California. In fact, they believe Mr. Hastings all the way to their entrapment in the Sierra Nevadas.
In this book, you will meet every kind of human being there is --- the gullible, the boastful, the self-sacrificing, and the stingy. There are those who give their lives so others can live, and those who refuse to share their food with people who are starving to death. There are those who reduce themselves to cannibalism, and those who refuse to justify such acts. Who survives? At what cost? Reading this book will make you think about what's really most important in life.

A new My Name is America book about the Donner Party.
By Rebecca Herman
In the spring of 1848, newly orphaned after the death of his father and with only a horse and one hundred dollars to his name, fifteen-year-old Douglas decides to leave Missouri and head west to the paradise of California. He joins the Donner wagon train and expects to complete the journey in just a few months, and to be settled down in his new home by the first snowfall. Little does he imagine the disastrous journey and ghastly horrors that lay ahead. The men of the wagon train insist on following the unknown Hastings shortcut, believing it will shorten the journey by a month. They never expected to encounter scorching hot deserts and long stretches with no water. They never expected that their food would run out, that their animals would be stolen. But most of all, they never expected to be stranded by the first snowfall in the bitter cold Sierra Nevada Mountains. Making camp by a frozen lake they come to call Starvation Lake, the survivors can do nothing but wait for what may come, be it rescue - or death. Through it all, Douglas chronicles his experiences in his journal. I recommend this book to all readers who enjoyed the previous My Name is America books.

The Donner Party Expedition

Summary by Nick Huitt

Once there was a boy who joined the Donner Party Expedition on the way to California who got in a lot of problems once he got stuck in the woods. Another time he almost died in a blizzard of cold ness and starvation.

The main character is Douglas Allen Deeds. He is a 15-year-old boy. He likes to go on adventures. He has a best friend named Edward.

The problems the train had got stuck in the snow. The Chickasha Indians stole and killed over 20 heads of cattle. Later in the book they tried to walk on foot, but some left and some died 2 got to California.

The boy tried to stay alive by eating food and not sharing with the others the food he caught. The main thing this book is about is completing his journey.

I think this book would be better for older kids. Because people get murdered, and die. It also had bad language. I thought this was a good story about a young boy's adventure.

How do you know air is around you when you can't see it?
Can you make a balloon fly through the air?
How can you tell there's pizza in the oven when you haven't been in the kitchen?

From Publishers Weekly
Using an oblong format, brief text and simple hands-on activities, Seymour Simon and daughter-in-law Nicole Fauteux launch the Let's Try It Out series and teach basic science concepts with Let's Try It Out in the Air and Let's Try It Out in the Water, both illus. by Doug Cushman. In the first title, an illustration of a boy dangling a limp balloon in front of puzzled pets begs the question: "What happens when you fill a balloon with air?" A suggested activity blowing up a balloon and using it "to play volleyball with your friends" explains why the balloon stays aloft then floats to the ground. The second title asks kids to imagine a day at the beach but features activities they can try in a wading pool or bathtub.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-These series titles offer fun-filled activities to use as introductions to basic scientific principles. Each book contains notes to parents, teachers, and child-care providers about the types of activities incorporated, readily available materials needed, and working with children to help them make observations with their "bodies and senses." Typically, the titles ask readers to imagine a particular scene, such as being at the beach or outside on a windy day. A series of questions then follows along with some clearly written information and suggestions for simple experiments. For instance, Air challenges readers to see how long they can keep a balloon moving by blowing underneath it. In Water, after imagining they are at the ocean and spot a ship, children are encouraged to make a boat out of foil and place objects on it that previously did not float and report their observations. Cheerful drawings of ethnically diverse youngsters complement the texts by effectively illustrating the concepts and activities. These titles for the youngest scientists will work well in conjunction with the "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science" series (HarperCollins).

Reviewed with Seymour Simon and Nicole Fauteux's Let's Try It Out in the Water.

Ages 4-9. Why does a small pebble sink in water while a big ship can float? What makes a balloon fly? Why do we smell cookies baking in the oven? How does the stink from a passing garbage truck reach us? The answers are complicated, but these playful picture books do a great job of using hands-on activities in daily life to explain basic science to young children. The book about water is full of splashing fun, teaching the concept of buoyancy by showing kids emptying containers into the sink, sailing boats in a pool, wading in the ocean. The book about air is more difficult, but in both books the writers include helpful information for adults about how to teach the science as an active part of the child's ordinary experience. The exuberant, colorful pictures add to the fun. The same cast of four children appears in both books (with a dog, a mischievous cat, and the occasional adult), exploring their world, asking questions, and then discovering astonishing patterns about how things work.
