A Mostly Successful Heroic Fantasy

This is a fine novel set in a medieval world that has just a touch of magic about. The story involves one Jamie the Red, one of the sons of a Scottish nobleman who as it happens is constantly fighting with his brother, Jamie the Black. Dad eventually has enough and banishes Jamie the Red, so he sets out to find his fortune in the Wars in Europe.
The timeframe the book is set in seems a bit murky (or I missed it) but it's clearly the Middle Ages. Italy is on their way to becoming a major trading power and other power centers such as Constantinople are mentioned. Jamie finds himself joining a mercenary band for hire (these were common in this timeframe) besieging some random noble in some side war in France. Over time he runs into a couple of magicians who predict various fates for him, a witch who nearly steals his will and/or soul, and a gets involved in a whole bunch of political intrigue.
I enjoyed this book though I thought it lagged a bit towards the end. It's pretty clear that Dickson intended this to be the first of several novels which (as near as I can tell) never really panned out. As it is then its an interesting swords-with-a-bit-of-sorcery novel that never really reaches a terribly satisfying conclusion, but it's solid enough on its own.
Recommended for any fan of this kind of heroic fantasy and/or fans of Gordon R. Dickson's many works.
