Grade 2-4–Wattenberg retells Aesop's "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" with a horde of job-hunting pups answering a newspaper ad for "fierce, snarling guard dogs." Leading the cast are reliable Hunky-Dory in his plain brown fedora and boastful Bix with his collection of goofy hats. While Hunky-Dory reads Shepherd's Golden Rules ("Rule #1: Never Cry Wooooof! unless you really need to"), Bix declares that "rules are for fools." He quickly tires of the boring job and lets loose a howl, and the story follows its familiar course until the dog finds himself nose-to-nose with a wolf. Wattenberg's photo collages seem lighter and brighter than those in Henny Penny (Scholastic, 2000), and, like the previous outing, there are plenty of sight gags (such as a "lambulance" and beady-eyed hedges). The overall effect of all the sight gags and puns, along with the garish colors, is overwhelmingly cluttered. The hip-hop banter moves along at a brisk clip, but the humor feels forced in lines like: "Mopey and blue, feeling like glue, BIX called to his flock,/ 'Hey fluffballs! Ewe-ram-a-lamb-a-ding-dongs!/ Wanna play HIDE-AND-PEEK?'" Jane Wattenberg is the best-selling author/artist of the accordion-style board books Mrs. Mustard's Baby Faces and Mrs. Mustard's Beastly Babies. She has also illustrated many distinguished book jackets including Make Lemonade. In Spring 2000, Scholastic Press published Henny-Penny, her debut picture book. It is a hip-hopping, eye-popping adaptation of the classic story that caused the New York Times Book Review to squawk “YOWZA!” Publishers Weekly raved in a starred review, “this fine feathered picture book ROCKS!”
Her second title with Scholastic Press with Never Cry Woof! A Dog-U-Drama will be published in Spring 2005. Using the her trademark photo-compositions, Jane gives a sly retelling of an Aesop's fable that is filled with waggish puns, sublime rhyme, and rockin' rhythm.

Ms. Wattenberg does it again

Let me qualify this by saying that my dogs appear in Ms. Wattenberg's book and that I had the chance to watch her during their photo shoot. That said, 'Never Cry Woof!' is a great entry into her unique canon of kids books. I first read her terrific 'Henny Penny.' Although I don't have kids, I enjoyed every page.
She does a great job of making her characters feel real (the photography merged with illustration and typography helps). Her use of bright colors, strong shapes and backgrounds, cinematic angles, and the cutest critters make for a read that feels like a slice of life combined with traditional storytelling for an exciting, modern effect. All the visuals aside, her writing is a hoot -- she even folds in foreign languages in a clever and rare attempt to open kids' minds to other tongues.
Try this one out. It's refreshing and different.

clever version of boy who cried wolf

This clever adaptation of Aesop's classic fable The Boy who Cried Wolf is particularly notable for its hilarious dog photographs, manipulated by the illustrator in Photoshop. In this version of the story, two dogs, boastful Bix and faithful Hunky-Dory, both work as shepherds tending their flocks of sheep. When Bix cries "wolf" a few too many times out of boredom, the other dogs refuse to come when their help is really needed. The text is full of puns and silly rhymes that suit the oversized photographs featuring dogs wearing hats of all descriptions, including Viking helmets, all captured in brilliant Technicolor. Adults and older children will appreciate the many puns while younger children will enjoy the very funny and colorful photographs. The graphic design of the book, with its mix of bold text and photographs, is also very striking. All in all, a worthy new addition to the many versions of this classic fable. Recommended for children three through eight.

NEVER CRY WOOF!

This is a hilarious children's book! It is a retelling of the famous "boy who cried wolf" story starring two dogs, one named Hunky-Dory and another named Bix. Hunky-Dory tries to play by the rules while Bix is impatient and impulsive. Both dogs get hired to watch separate flocks of sheep in order to protect them from wolves. Bix speaks in a funny dog form of beatnik lingo and doesn't take his job very seriously, which of course bothers the other canines. The book puts a new twist on the old tale of personal responsibility. The pictures are also very colorful and sure to get a reaction from kids, especially dog lovers! I recommend this book and look forward to reading more books from Ms. Wattenberg!
