Cordelia Lu Hankins is half Caucasian, half Chinese--and all albino. She has grown up isolated from the world, with her distant father and a giant stepmother named Babe (after Paul Bunyan's blue ox) in a remote lumber town in the Pacific Northwest. But in the summer of 1918, she meets Squirl. Squirl is charming, easygoing, and good looking, and Cordy falls desperately in love with him. One day they meet on the mountain and Cordy receives her first kiss, as well
as a wild ride down a log flume that gets Squirl fired.
Determined to follow Squirl, Cordy runs away and begins an exciting adventure that takes her to the sideshows of Seattle's Luna Park, where her unusual looks bring her fame. But her journey also brings tragedy in this fast-paced coming-of-age novel with a remarkable, original heroine.

Grade 7-10-Half Caucasian, half Chinese, and all albino, Cordelia grows up in isolation in a Washington state lumber camp. After her mother's death, her distant father, a mill superintendent, marries Babe, a giantess named for Paul Bunyan's ox. The girl has no contact with the outside world and counts the days until her 18th birthday when she can escape to anywhere. In 1918, at age 14, she meets and falls in love with Squirl, a handsome, reckless teen who works the log booms. After her first kiss, they ride the log flume down the mountain and land right under the nose of Cordy's father, who fires the boy and punishes his daughter, whom he thinks has acted promiscuously. Ignorant about the facts of life and believing herself to be pregnant, the girl runs away to a disreputable honky-tonk area of Seattle, where she plans to meet Squirl. Cordy's albinism proves to be her meal ticket as she becomes a sideshow attraction and meets a variety of colorful individuals from all walks of society. Babe is revealed to be Giganta, a former sideshow performer wanted for murder. Squirl is revealed as a gambler, womanizer, and total cad. A strange cast of characters and an unusual setting will intrigue readers, but some of the coincidences are a bit unbelievable. Cordy is brave and lucky; readers will be interested both in her physical challenges and na?vet?, but she's so gullible and such a poor judge of character that it is amazing that she comes through unscathed. Readers will be sure to breathe a sigh of relief at the almost "happily ever after" ending.

Mixed-race Cordelia is half Caucasian, half Chinese, and albino. She has grown up sheltered and unsophisticated in a small, isolated community in Washington. She has always felt ugly and unwanted. Her emotionally distant father manages the sawmill, and her stepmother, a giant woman nicknamed Babe for Paul Bunyan's blue ox, is the lumber camp cook. The summer Cordelia is 14, she falls in love with a devil-may-care young logger named Squirl, and when he is fired, she leaves home in search of him. She finds him in Seattle, living in a bordello owned by his sister. In short order he becomes Cordelia's manager, and after tutoring from a transvestite fortune teller, she becomes the star attraction in a sideshow at a nearby amusement park. After that, Cordelia grows up fast, eventually discovering that Squirl is less than he seems--and Babe is more. Set in 1918, this hybrid gothic-historical novel is badly compromised by contrivance, coincidence, and character inconsistencies. What will keep readers' attention is the sheer audacity of the story, and Cordelia's agreeable spunk and wit. Michael Cart

pacific-northwest based historical novel
By A Customer
All the idiosyncracies of this novel blend in with the swirl of crazy life in early twentieth century Seattle and a logging camp in western Washington. Cordy, an albino Chinese-American, falls hard for Squirl, a logger. She follows him to Seattle where life is completely different than in the logging camp. Populated with offbeat characters, this book moves rapidly along. Unfortunately, the characters develop either one-dimensionally or not at all. Cordy's new understanding of life at the end of the novel doesn't jibe with her growth throughout the book. However, this is a very good read for the flavor of Seattle as a growing, but still frontier-like town.

A great book
By A Customer
In this book Cordy, a unique half chinese, half caucasian, albino girl falls in love with Squirl a mischevios seventeen year old who is working as a logger at her father's mill. When Squirl gets fired, Cordy is determined to follow him, so she runs away to Seattle to live with Squirl and his wealthy sister at Luna park. It is a moving story, that ends in tragedy, but is overall a very good book.
