She's younger than Babar, shyer than Lily, and every bit as cute as Olivia. Look out! Here's ELLA!

Ella's counting the days until the first day of school ... but not because she's eager to start! On the contrary, as the littlest elephant on Elephant Island, she's terribly nervous about the other kids she'll meet. Then she receives a beautiful red hat that belonged to her grandmother -- her new lucky charm. Big mean Belinda at school teases her for it, calling her "Ella the Elegant Elephant." But Ella's brave enough to hold on to her hat, and in the end, the hat (and her heart) save the day.
With warm, rich pictures and a charming main character, ELLA is sure to be a new favorite.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2–A young elephant is new to town and anxious about starting school. On her first day, she wears her grandmother's fancy "good luck hat," causing a bully named Belinda and her friends to dub her "Ella the Ella-gant." When Belinda slips on the safety wall that surrounds the schoolyard and protects the students from a very big drop, Ella attempts a rescue only to slip and fall herself. Fortunately, the lucky hat acts as a parachute, transporting Ella and Belinda to safety. The next day, the entire class, bullies included, sports fancy hats, and a message on the chalkboard reads, "We love Ella." With its charming and whimsical cartoons and simple design, this offering seems like a picture book from an earlier era. Ella is a likable character, and children will be able to relate to her emotions. Unfortunately, the story is nothing new and the text may be a bit long for some youngsters. Despite these shortcomings, parents who are nostalgic for Jean de Brunhoff's The Story of Babar (Random, 1937) will appreciate the D'Amicos's kinder, gentler elephant tale.–Rachel G. K-Gr. 2. On the Elephant Islands, "hidden by fog so thick no human being has ever found them," shy little elephant Ella, new to town, worries about school and making friends. Ella loves her big red hat, a special gift from Grandma, but wearing it the first day of school brings teasing, especially from big bully Belinda. But when Belinda's antics put her in a dangerous situation, Ella steps in to help--and is surprised to discover that her hat is more special than she thought. Combining a fairy-tale quality with elements in story and setting that will be familiar to children, this has a charming protagonist, as well as lovely, whimsical art, in a soft, rich palette and style that evokes the work of H. A. Rey and recalls Ludwig Bemelmans' Madeline in its rows of students clad in identical blue uniforms and "Ecole" written over the school gate. The text is simple, descriptive, and often lively, making a good read-aloud. Listeners will sympathize with Ella's challenges and appreciate the rewards that come from her showing compassion and staying true to herself. Shelle Rosenfeld

Followers of Jean de Brunhoff and Ludwig Bemelmans may experience deja-vu upon reading the D'Amicos' debut. Ella, a Madeline-ish young elephant, possesses a WWII-era flair and lives in a faraway realm: "Somewhere in the great, wide Indian Ocean lie the Elephant Islands, hidden by a fog so thick that no human being has ever found them." Ella's rocky islands protrude from the ocean like terra-cotta turrets, topped with multicolored minarets. Inside this exotic city, bipedal elephant villagers shop at whitewashed, clay-roofed stores like a "Tuskery" and peanut emporium. On her first day at the island "ecole," Ella wears a navy-blue uniform like her peers, but chooses to sport her grandmother's "good luck hat," a floaty flame-orange number that trumps her classmates' austere caps: "The teacher asked if she wouldn't mind sitting... in the back row, so she wouldn't block the other students' view of the chalkboard." Ella's fashion statement soon attracts a bully's attention. Only at recess, when a mishap atop the city wall reveals the hat's magical, parachute-like properties, does Ella achieve acceptance. The memorable characters and setting transform a familiar tale of nonconformity; Steven D'Amico's soft, sinuous colored-pencil line and plush palette recall H.A. Rey's illustrations. The Elephant Islands would make a promising locale for future adventures, and the appealing Ella-who's simply drawn yet unique, like Charles M. Schulz's Woodstock-could easily adapt to new stories and m

Ella is a sweet little elephant
By VolunteerMom
Ella is a lovely little elephant! This book reminds me of books I read as a child, and I am a Grandma now. The illustrations are lovely and
the story teaches a lesson but isn't pushy about it. A very sweet book.

DON'T READ THE EDITORIAL REVIEW
By A. Mersinger
Hopefully it's not too late and you haven't read the review above as it gives away the sweet, tear-inducing ending to a beautifully illustrated tale described so well by the other "amateur" reviewers. I read this to my almost-2 year old and my 4 year old, and they both love the pictures and the story. There are quite a few lessons to be learned from this story - I appreciate the fact that even though she is made fun of for her hat, she continues to wear it to school because it means so much to her. I still tear-up a little at the end. It's really a hopeful story - it makes me hopeful that my own children see results/appreciation when they do their best to do the right thing. I have purchased 3 copies and will continue to do so as friends have babies.

Amazon.com Review
The board book version of this popular recitation of animal characteristics is equally as delightful as other editions, with one key improvement: it's inedible. This robust reissue follows lovable Lloyd the llama on his quest to find out what percentage of the baby animal population has llamas for mamas. The rhymes are original and infectious, and the riddles are sure to have children shouting out the answers in anticipation of turning the page.

Youngsters often exhibit an insatiable appetite for adorable baby animals, and Is Your Mama a Llama provides plenty of fodder for fawning. Illustrator Steven Kellogg, however, manages to keep the pictures sweet without being saccharine. And rest assured, no matter how often your little one is compelled to kiss the critters, the sturdy board-book format will stand the test of time (and of course, slobber). (Ages 0 to 4)

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1-- An enchanting animal guessing game for preschoolers. Lloyd, a baby llama, asks each of his friends, "Is your mama a llama?," and all respond in turn with a rhyming description of their mother that is answered on the following page. Young listeners will delight in the playful rhythm of the text, and each riddle is sure to result in a resounding chorus of response. Kellogg's full-color illustrations of animals in their natural surroundings maintain their usual appeal and humor and will carry well to groups, while individual readers will be further rewarded by the subtlety and detail of the backgrounds. --Starr LaTronica, North Berkeley Library, CA

As a Middle School Language Arts teacher, I found this volume to be a handy "go to" resource for MS topical short stories outside of the text and classics.
It is hard to beat "The Open Window" or "The Necklace", but this collection has several pieces that the students respond to and found interesting enough to engage one another over.
And, unicorns existing in the NY subway is a wonderful place to visit as a starting place for creative reflection.

Nice book of short stories published in 1987, and still relevant today. An excerpt from one of the stories was recently used on our state wide exams. The students were so interested that they wanted to know the ending of their story. Good purchase, I've used several stories in class.

Odetta: The Queen of Folk, by Stephen Alcorn

A picture book that shines light on the indomitable life of one of the most influential American folksingers in the history of our country.

In the spirit of WHEN MARIAN SANG, this book introduces young readers to Odetta, an American folk legend. Lyrical text and striking paintings tell the story of the incredible singer whose life and works inspired such icons as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Tracy Chapman. The book comes from the author's long and fruitful artistic relationship with Odetta and is based on personal dialogues he had with her before her death in December 2008.

From School Library Journal
Gr 3-6–Through stunning illustrations and text, Alcorn pays tribute to the incomparable folksinger. When Odetta was born in 1930 in Birmingham, AL, the Deep South was enmeshed in Jim Crow laws. Music offered solace: “Spirituals, gospel, prison, and work songs: the cup of soup Odetta grew up on!” Alcorn's eye-catching paintings boldly blend iconic and folk elements. As a shocked Odetta watches, a water fountain's torrent of frothy letters spells out “Whites Only.” Odetta's musical hero was Marian Anderson; Alcorn depicts her soaring with the sparrows in flowing angels' robes, pearls, and multicolored wings. Odetta's family found welcome in Los Angeles, where her talents came of age: “The way Odetta sang, not even Jim Crow could tell her no!” Alcorn's prose is spirited and playful; as Odetta wins renown, her music unites people of all races. One brilliantly composed scene finds her amid a cotton field, her billowing sack teeming with birds she is waving aloft. An author's note lends context and perspective; additionally, there is a list of recommended recordings. This is a rousing introduction to a musical trailblazer.–Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CAα(c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. From Booklist
*Starred Review* The ranks of picture-book musician biographies swell with each passing season, but rarely are they done with as much elegance as in this ode to the folk pioneer Odetta. The project conceived and illustrated by Alcorn and featuring verse by Thornhill incorporates into Odetta’s childhood a story of intertwined musical inspirations—backbreaking-work spirituals and chain-gang rhythms—and themes of civil inequality that would inform her music. But it’s not all serious tones—Odetta was a raucous child who loved to drive her auntie mad banging away on a piano, and Thornhill’s free verse opens into short, sharp lines that are a joy to read aloud: “Odetta couldn’t / just sing, she / could sang. / To sang is to sing / like you need the music / as much / as birds / need sky.” Both in the text and in the quilted, flowing patterns of Alcorn’s paintings, the bird serves as a dramatic metaphor, issuing doubly from Odetta’s throat and a cage when she first begins to sing, soaring high as her family leaves the Jim Crow South for the haven of Los Angeles, and bursting in flocks from a pillowy cotton field as Odetta sows her songs across the world. Soulful and uplifting, this tribute introduces an important social activist who opened the eyes and delighted the ears of countless folk singers and music lovers, but will likely be a fresh subject for children. Grades 2-4. --Ian Chipman

Publisher's Weekly Starred Review:
Thornhill's poem pays powerful tribute to the folk-singing legend, beginning with early experiences that shaped her music ("Spirituals, gospel,/ prison, and work/ songs: the cup/ of soup Odetta/ grew up on!") and her first exposure to segregation when her family moved to Los Angeles. As Odetta grows older, she discovers her voice ("Odetta couldn't/ just sing, she/ could sang./ To sang is to sing/ like you need the music/ as much/ as birds/ need sky") and becomes a central figure in the civil rights movement. Filled with stars, candles, lightning bolts, music notes, and angels, Alcorn's rousing compositions borrow from folk art traditions, religious imagery, graphic design, and 1960s album cover art, creating a rich tapestry that trumpets the power of this singular figure. Ages 7–10. (Dec.)

A tribute to Odetta but, without any music, it rings hollow
By Steve Ramm
This book is a nice tribute to Odetta - who died in 2008 - but kids won't learn much about her from it. The text - partly written in slang - says that she wanted to play piano as a child in Montgomery, AL but her aunt wouldn't let her play. So when she moved to Los Angeles as a child her mother got her training. She learned the guitar and then spread the "gospel" of civil rights. That's the whole story. There are two pages of what might be considered biographical info at the back but even that only gives basic info like her last name and when she was born and died. There's a VERY short listening list. It would have been nice for the publisher, Scholastic Books, to have licensed a few tracks from Vanguard to put on a CD inserted in the back (there is none) which would have given children a chance to hear her.

The illustrations by the author are colorful and the book can be used as a tool to discuss civil rights and segregation in the south and will, at least, get this pioneer folk singer some name recognition among children.

A fine introductory story to the black musician Odetta
By Midwest Book Review
Stephen Alcorn's ODETTA: THE QUEEN OF FOLK provides a fine introductory story to the black musician Odetta, whose folk music served as inspiration for black and white musicians alike. Lovely colorful drawings accompany an inspirational piece perfect for any seeking to introduce the young to Odetta's magic.

Ruined by a Passage
By DAC
This is about Odetta Holmes, a folk music legend and a politcal activist. Alcorn begins when Odetta is born. As young girl, Odetta finds the piano and her voice. Alcorn shows the Jim Crow world Odetta grew up in. When Odetta gets older she uses her to bring a little peace. Alcorn uses a lyrical style, which is very fitting for a musical biography. His illustrations are vivid and beautiful.

I liked the Odetta: The Queen of Folk the first time. I only wished there was more back information. There is an There's only a page and a half Ode to Odetta. Which isn't extensive enough especially since the story itself leans more towards fictional. More back information could've round up Odetta: The Queen of Fok nicely.

I like to read picture books at least twice. Usually the second time in, I can take the time to appreicate the text and illustrations more. Or in this case spot something I missed.

Someone in Birmingham
Alabama, a long
long-time ago must've
accidentally burned
the Christmas ham
That's how the city
of Birmingham
got its nickname
Burning Ham

That's the second passage. I am surprised I didn't see that the first time. After I saw it, I couldn't unseen it. It ruined the whole book for me. I wouldn't expect Birmingham's 1960's nickname Bombingham to make it into a children's picture book.

However to spin a tale like this and say Birmingham is called Burning Ham because of a burned christmas ham seems very very wrong to me and lessens the truth of what really happened.

When I pointed this out to a friend, they suggested maybe it was something Odetta said, meant to be witty folk wisdom. That's very possible and if it was Alcorn should've referenced it in the back.

For half a second I considered not posting this, in case Odetta really did say that or something similar. Though I decided I would risk looking foolish.

Amazon.com Review
Who are the people who shaped America? Lawyers, artists, rebels, guides, fighters, doctors, athletes, astronomers, airplane pilots, environmentalists, scientists, politicians, and parents. These men... Wait a second! We're not talking about men, here. Although American history has always emphasized Founding Fathers, Sons of Liberty, boys in uniform, etc., there have been millions of women who have had an equally profound impact on the identity and character of the country. In 1776 Abigail Adams told her husband, future president John Adams, to "remember the ladies," when thinking about their new government. Author Cheryl Harness has taken those words to heart in her celebration of just 100 of the illustrious, sometimes forgotten women in American history. Vibrant, well-known women, including Pocahontas, Lucretia Mott, Eleanor Roosevelt, Toni Morrison, and Madeleine Albright, fill the pages of this exciting book, as do less familiar women such as Phillis Wheatley, the first African American to be published (in the 1770s); pioneer Abigail Scott Duniway, who ran a hat shop, a school, and a newspaper to support her disabled husband and their six children while campaigning to win equal justice for women; and Antonia Novello, the first Hispanic woman to be surgeon general. Every page, chronologically ordered, is packed with illustrations and fascinating, conversational text. Additional resources (glossary, bibliography, lists of historic sites and women's organizations, a pictorial timeline, and more) guide readers to learn more about these remarkable heroines. Girls--and boys--will be empowered by the tremendous accomplishments of America's best and brightest. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
And, reaching further back in history, Remember the Ladies: 100 Great American Women by Cheryl Harness, in her signature style, offers brief biographies within a larger history of women. She begins with Virginia Dare, "the first English child born in America" in 1587, proceeds to Pocahontas; includes Abigail Adams (whose quote inspired the volume's title), Harriet Tubman, Eleanor Roosevelt, Gloria Steinem, Barbara Jordan and Oprah Winfrey; and closes with director and costume designer Julie Taymor and Ruth J. Simmons, the African-American president of Smith College.

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-Borrowing her title from a statement made by Abigail Adams to her husband, Harness has carefully selected 100 women deserving of such remembrance. Twenty double-page spreads take readers through American history, from the "New World" through the "Turn of the Millennium." Each chapter offers a paragraph about the era covered and introduces a few of its important women. The watercolor paintings are colorful, inviting, and lighthearted. At the end of the book, the author muses about what Abigail Adams might think about the United States in the 21st century. In the illustration, Adams gazes into a computer monitor, surrounded by such "pals" as Eleanor Roosevelt, Emma Hart Willard, and Maya Angelou. A pictorial time line showing all of the women standing in chronological order sums up the book. Brief lists of historic sites and women's organizations are appended. This easy-to-browse title offers a broad yet cursory look at exemplary American women. As such, it is a lively overture to well-known (and should be well-known) historical figures. Students, however, will need to look elsewhere to find the real nitty-gritty on the individuals covered here. Sue Heinemann's The New York Public Library Amazing Women in American History (Wiley, 1998) is another accessible overview of the subject. While not a primary choice, Remember the Ladies should inspire classrooms focusing on women in American history.-Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI

Amazon.com Review
Although there are many children's books about divorce, few move beyond bland therapeutic preaching into the realm of well-told stories. This one does. A hard look at joint-custody life, The Suitcase Kid follows Andrea West and her tiny stuffed rabbit, Radish, through the painful adjustment of being a kid with divorced parents. She must leave the home she loves with the mulberry tree in the front yard, and deal with parents who still fight, step parents, step siblings, two different bedrooms (neither of which is really hers), loneliness, and an acute longing for the past. Her grades sink. Her friends drift away. And she's not quite sure how to fix any of it.

Wisely, Jacqueline Wilson doesn't offer instant solutions; rather, she chronicles Andy's journey to the beginning of equilibrium in her new life. Things will never be the way they were, but, as the book suggests, they'll get better over time. And because it's well written and honest, The Suitcase Kid will appeal to any child who enjoys realistic fiction, not just those who "need" to read a book about divorce. (The publisher recommends the The Suitcase Kid for ages 8-12, but it could easily serve kids who are a couple of years younger or older.)

From Publishers Weekly
When Andy's parents get divorced, she finds herself spending alternate weeks at Mom's house, then at Dad's, and longs for the days when they were all at home together. Ages 9-12.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6. Ten-year old Andrea's parents have divorced and remarried and now she has several stepsiblings. She spends one week at her mother's house and the next at her father's. She wants her old family and their house, called Mulberry Cottage, back. The only comfort in her life is her lucky mascot toy rabbit, Radish, who lives in her pocket and offers her security. This realistic story told in 26 short chapters (one for each letter of the alphabet) gives Andy's view of her world of mean stepfamilies, her heartbreak and self-pity, and her own solution of creating an escape through her adventures with Radish. Light humor and an eventual realization on Andy's part that she is loved by her Mom and Dad and even liked by some of her stepsiblings and new half-sister (and that she likes some of them, too) make this a satisfying read.?Kathy East, Wood County District Public Library, OH

Jacqueline Wilson, the writer of THE SUITCASE KID (1992), has won many awards by having her own style, in which she typically writes about modern British kids facing daily problems. The novel comments on the common problem of divorce and portray a kid called Andrea, revealing her situation when her parents divorced. Her Mum remarried into a family with three chilodren. The novel discusses how Andrea divides her time between two homes.

The complication continues in the story, as Andrea lives with her Dad for a week, and then lives with her Mum for a week. Since she doesn't a have a stable situation, and feeling that she's not part of either family, she determines to reunite Mum and Dad and go back to her original home, Mulberry Cottage, full of warm memories.

She is right in the middle of the see-saw. However, there is an eternal advocate for Andrea, and it's a Sylvanian Family rabbit called Radish, her pet, and very important in Andrea's life.

Andrea is having hard time in tolerating her step-mother, father, sisters, and brother: she suffers from unfairness. When she faces her parents every week, the cacophony of argument roars throught the house. But, Andrea faces the situation with maturity.

I adored reading this book. The chapters are cleverly divided by letter-based names such as chapter one, "A is for Andy" which is creative and special for little kids but may seem dumb for teenagers. The story starts slowly but builds drama and allows to identify with Andrea.

Andrea no longer gets to see her best friend as much because although Andrea still sees Aileen at school, Aileen no longer lives close and spends more time with Fiona.

I personally loathed the parents of Andrea's Mum's new husband, "Uncle" Bill because they refuse to send presents, saying there is no blood connection.

Also, Mum's new stepdaughter, Katie, is total booger. Katie's execrable treatment of Andrea is unfair, even though Katie's real Mum has died. I hated Katie even though the author made me see that Katie had a reason for her behavior.

I recommend this book.

Tug of War - ABCs of Divorce
By BeatleBangs1964
Andrea (Andy) at 10 is living out of a suitcase. She alternates her weeks between her divorced parents. Her father has remarried Carrie, a post-Woodstock flower child who has 5-year-old twins Zen and Crystal from a previous marriage. She is pregnant with her third child, a girl. Andrea tries to make sense out of this by going through the ABCs of divorce, with each chapter going down the alphabet.

Andrea's mother has also remarried. Andrea dislikes her widower stepfather and calls him the Baboon. He has bratty Katie, 10 who is thoroughly spoiled; Grant, 12 and Paula, 14 who are pleasant and reasonable. I just hated the way Andrea's mother defended Katie regardless. Katie treated Andrea badly with impunity and that bothered me. Even though one could sympathize with her fear of dying in her sleep, because as Grant explained, Katie was told when their mother died that death "was like going to sleep." Still, that doesn't excuse her execrable treatment of Andrea and her malicious sneakiness. People who glorify Other People's Children to their own and let themselves be conned and beguiled by Other People's Children make me tired. Sneaky Katie lies; destroys Andrea's things and ridicules her for being inordinately attached to her stuffed rabbit, Radish.

I disliked the way Andrea's parents used her as a pawn against each other. When the girl became ill and couldn't leave one home for another, once again her natural parents try to use her against each other. Another thing that bothered me was the way each parent spoke against the other's new spouse. I also disliked the Baboon's parents because they excluded Andrea and made a big point of buying presents for their natural grandchildren.

Andrea's school work suffers; she and her parents see a counselor who talks down to Andrea and is generally irksome. I didn't like the cloying, annoying way she spoke to Andrea. In time, Andrea accepts the fact that she is the link in two extended families; Katie will continue being allowed to get away with murder, but at least she has the twins, Grant, Paula and some kind neighbors who have moved into her former house on her side. The house she pines for is called Mulberry Cottage. That in turn makes me think of the inane song, "here we go 'round the mulberry bush." Plenty of thorny characters in this story.

When the parents split up, where do you fit in?
By Mary G. Longorio
Andy West's parents have divorced and have started new lives with other partners. Andy is to spend one week with her mother and the "Baboon" and his miserable children. While there, she is forced to share her step-sister Katie's room, and Katie goes out of her way to make Andy miserable. On the weeks Andy stays with her dad and his "new agey" wife Carrie, she shares a room with 5 year old twins Zen and Crystal, and their mess. To add to the misery, Carrie is pregnant. The only one who understands's Andy's confusion is her constant companion Radish, a tiny toy rabbit. Radish understands how Andy misses the tiny cottage she and her parents shared. Radish understands how hard it is to make people you barely know, your family. Radish understands how hard it is to remember all your schoolwork and belongings when you stay at two places. All Andy wants is a place for her and Radish to feel at home. One day she and Radish discover a tiny, hidden garden, that they long to make their own. This is a sensitive story of divorce and one child trying to cope with events out of her control. Once again, Jacqueline Wilson has displayed an uncanny understanding of the needs of a child, and a true ear for dialog. This is a sweet book and a must read for anyone you know who has been touched by divorce.

The 'I Spy' books are great for kids of any age. My child loves them. I thought they would get old once everything was found, but they don't. Since they are small and light they are great to take along when traveling.

Fun holiday version of the classic I Spy collection
By Kelly Schuknecht
I Spy books and other products are so much fun! In this holiday version we see a number of holiday scenes and get to search for items in the rhyme. My kids and I like to turn it into a game to see who can find each item first. The last few pages in this book have some word games (i.e. which words end with the letter y). This is a nice addition for older children who are learning to read.

Perfect for Self Contained students

Perfect for those students at various levels, easy to comprehend without being too childish for secondary. Good to intermingle with functional skills.

Great book for teaching reading and critical thinking skills!
By a customer
This extraordinary book is an outstanding resource. In addition to teaching essential life skills, it answers the question "Why study reading?" Students apply reading to practical, everyday situations, learning to be better informed consumers than many adults. Later the same day, they can find opportunities to apply the lesson content in daily life situations outside school, and to teach the skills to family members.

This book offers the opportunity to learn and apply academic vocabulary skills. It offers valuable material for functional or process reading, helping students build critical reading skills. Its real-world application makes it attractive even to reluctant readers.

One of my frustrations in life is that so many adults do not read labels, or that they do not know how to use the information. I was so happy to discover the label-reading activities. As a nutrition nut, I particularly appreciate the nutrition label reading.

An additional feature teachers will appreciate is that it connects to CCSS standards in both reading and math.
Many thanks to the author. Keep those books coming, Cindy Harris!
