Tons of fun

My grandson and I spend hours on these I Spy books. What I love is that even if we finish finding everything in the book (which we haven't on this particular book in the I Spy series), a couple months later, we have just as much fun doing it all over again!

A Startling, personal account of the Holocaust

Isabella Leitner cannot forgive the German and Hungarian people for their silence during the atrocities that were perpetrated upon the Jews during the Holocaust. As a Jew living in Hungary, she wass ubjected to constant racial hatred by the townspeople and the sadistic behavior of the brutal Hungarian gendarmes. Isabella's family is thrown into a ghetto and forced to live in a small, confined area with many other families. When the SS men round up the Jews, Isabella's family is forced out on to the streets where her mother is severely beaten. Isabella's nightmare begins at this point. Isabella's father attempted to earn his family their freedom from the anti-Semitic Hungary but government officials impeded their release. At every juncture, the father was unable to secure his family's exit from Hungary. Isabella and her family feared for their lives because they knew that their Hungarian neighbors could not be trusted to protect them from the SS. In fact, Isabella believed that her neighbors "would be Hitler's willing accomplices" when the bell tolled for the Leitners. On May, 29, 1944, Isabella's worst fears were realized. The SS rounded up the Jews to take them to the camps as the Hungarian townspeople watched. These good people stood by as the Germans marched in and led many of their neighbors to their death. The Gentiles knew what Hitler and the SS were doing to the Jews, Isabella believes. The Gentiles felt a
camaraderie, a oneness with Hitler, she says. Hitler exploited their hatred of the Jews and they remained silent while six million were sent to their death. Isabella lost her mother in the concentration camp. Her mother was too weak and frail to fight after the guards had beaten her during the round-up. Yet the Leitner girls formed a bond during their stay at Auschwitz. They kept each other alive and forced the others to fight against disease, lethargy, and the destruction of the soul. The concentration camps bonded them to each other and they maintained that bond throughout their lives. After spending time in the Auschwitz camp, the sisters were moved to Birnbaumel and then on to Prauschnitz, where the Jewish prisoners mingled withthe townspeople in this small town. Yet no town resident would help the Jews. They remained silent as the SS guards paraded them through the town. Isabella realizes many years later that "you will not find a single German who lived in Prauschnitz who ever saw a single one of us." These German people ignored the atrocities because (in their minds) the Jews were dirty animals who deserved extermination, she says. Leitner cannot forgive these people for ignoring the pleas of these prisoners. The Prauschnitz citizens allowed Isabella and her sisters to be tortured by the German guards. For Leitner, there is no forgiveness. Isabella lost her sister Cici during this time. When the sister
escaped from the unsuspecting guards, Cici was the only one to remain with the SS guards. Isabella learns many years later that Cici was "dragged for three long weeks on the death march to Bergen-Belsen where she was killed." Not one German person helped her sister. In 1960, Isabella and her husband traveled through Europe but Isabella wanted to avoid anything that would remind her of the German people and their silence during her internment in the camps. Yet she cannot avoid the Germans because the German people are now the main group of tourists who travel through Europe. When Isabella sees them, she reports, she bristles but ignores them, and says she doesn't mind the young ones so much because they are an innocent generation. It's the older ones. At Pere-Lachaise, Isabella comes face to face with her worst fears. She encounters a group of German people. These German people laugh and carry on, to her horror. When she discovers that they are truly
Germans, she recoils in horror as if "acid had been hurled in her face." She knows that any one of the men could have been her jailer. She knows that "they are the ones." For Isabella, these Germans are the same as the ones that stood by and watched as six million Jews were led to their death. Isabella cannot forgive them or the Hungarians who remained silent as her family was systematically destroyed. She leaves Pere-Lachaise with the knowledge that she can never forgive the silent citizens who were accomplices to Hitler's reign of terror. Leitner's memoir is a harrowing testament to the horrors of the Holocaust.

Incredible true account of a girl's life in the Holocaust

This was the best account of life in a German concentration camp that I have ever read. Once I started reading it I could not put it down. The reader gets so ingrossed in the book that you not only feel for the characters, but you feel as if you are one of the characters. This book is a must read for any reader who enjoys Holocaust books, or a reader who is just looking for a book that won't let you put it down.

Details Make this Story

This real-life account of a young girl in a Nazi concentration camp brought to mind Eli Weisel's Night. While lacking the philosophical questions that Weisel raises, Littner fills in the details that might seem insignificant but create a touchpoint for most young girls - the long description of losing her hair, the shoes and clothes she was given, the attempt to create beauty in the midst of ugliness- this book broke my heart even more than Night.

My 3 year old LOVES the pictures

This is one of my 3 year old boy's favorite books! He especially loves the page with all the tracks and the cars. He can stare at that page for several minutes. He will also carry the book around with him and show people "See the tracks!" And he tells me on a regular basis "I want to bring the tracks to MY house!" We love all the "I Spy" series, and have several of these books. But this book was of particular interest to my son. Funnily enough, we only play the I Spy game itself every once in awhile, but when we do, he is usually interested in playing...but we have to make it last longer than the book does. The book only has you find about 2 items per page. In this way, I think the book may be designed for kids slightly younger than my 3 year old. Nevertheless, he loves the cool pictures, and wants to keep all the cool toys.

So much fun!

Bought my two year old nephew the one of the Christmas I Spy books, and my sister called me to tell me how much he loves it, and she needed to get him another one because every night he asks for "I Spy" and she and daddy are sick of it! So, I bought him three more. I Spy Fun House, Treasure Hunt and Fantasy. I was worried that they would be too hard for him, but he loves looking at all the beautiful pictures and every night he notices/finds more and more! This series is fantastic, and he will sit for a solid hour with these books! Love them!

I Spy Little books

I got this for my 2 & 3/4 year old daughter and three other I Spy Little Books. She does not need board books now, but she likes to "read" them to her almost 1 year old brother. She will just leave them on the floor when she is done so they needed to be strong enough for him to chew on and whatever else he tries to do to the books. There is nothing cuter seeing my daughter get a book and make a story from the pictures for her brother. The pictures are simple enough for her to find any of the items listed and any other items we may ask her to find.

The saddening story of young Susanna Meritt.

Susanna Meritt lives near Nigarra in Canada, 1812. A war is whispering around her, and soon troops of Canadians are leaving Canada to fight America, determined to end their war of 'who owns Canada' once and for all. Susanna constantly worries for her family and herself, but mostly for her friend- Abigail Seabrook and her family, who are Americans, and are against the idea of going to war against their home country.

Whispers of War was an amazing book that cleverly told the 'War of 1812' in an intelligent and innocent way, immitating the voice of an innocent young girl as she watches her beautiful home- Canada, die around her.

Another wonderful Dear Canada book.

This book is one of the Dear Canada series, which are historical novels, written in diary format, about fictional girls during different periods of Canadian history.

Susanna Merritt is a young girl living near Niagara, Canada in 1812, the youngest in a large family. Susanna fears for her family as the war begins, but she is also very worried about her best friend, Abbie Seabrook. Abbie's family are Americans, who are reluctant to go to war against their home country. In her diary, Susanna describes what happens to her family and friends during the first few months of the War of 1812, and during the battle that takes place near her home.

As an American, I really enjoyed getting a different view of the War of 1812 from Susanna's Canadian perspective. I really liked the setting and the characters came alive in Susanna's diary. I'd recommend this book to readers who enjoyed any of the Dear America or Dear Canada books.

This is absolutly one of the best historical books i have EVER READ!

I have read this book about four times, and i never get bored of it. Heres my review - -

This book is about 11 - year - old Susanna Merritt, who lives in Upper Canada (around Ontario..) In 1812. Her family is constantly fearing about war, and talks about how many family members were killed in different wars.

Susanna Merritt lives a peaceful, safe life in the small town of St. Cathrines, with her sister Maria (15), mother, father, brother Hamilton Merritt (age 19) and her many pets. She goes to school, although the teacher is not very good at, well, ... Teaching.

When news comes that there IS going to be a war, Susanna and her family are devestated, as her brother and father must go off and fight.

Susanna also fears her friendship with Abby, who just moved to Canada from America two years ago, will not last.

But through everything, Susanna stays strong, and follows in her brother's footsteps by writting a diary.

Some interesting points in this book are:

The name Lang Lang should be a household word by now. Performing in the Bird's Nest for the Opening Ceremony at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, over 34.9 million viewers in the U.S. alone tuned in to watch. For many, this was their first introduction to the musical phenomena from China. At only 26 years of age, Lang Lang has accomplished more than many twice his age.

Starting at a young age, when most of us aren't even out of diapers yet, Lang Lang showed an affinity for the piano. Not being able to reach the pedals, and needing pillows under him to reach the keys, Lang Lang was a prodigy.

Coming from a humble background from the city of Shenyang, located northeast of Beijing, the only chance of any future in classical piano for Lang Lang would come if he could gain acceptance to the conservatory in Beijing. But he would have to place in the top eight to win one of the precious scholarships. Lang Lang's family could ill afford for him to attend without the scholarship. His family had sacrificed everything for him to get this far. His father left his job in Shenyang to travel to Beijing to be with Lang Lang. Lang Lang's mother remained in Shenyang to be the breadwinner of the family and support both Lang Lang and his father.

Spurred by his father's demand to be the best and Number 1, Lang Lang enters piano competitions, aspiring to be the best in China, then Europe, and ultimately the world. After winning the prestigious Tchaikovsky prize in Japan, he is admitted to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. While there, he continues his training, awaiting his lucky break into the world of classical piano.

LANG LANG: PLAYING WITH FLYING KEYS is a truly inspiring story. It tells of one young man's struggles to overcome poverty and his country's disdain to become one of the world's most renowned classical pianists. Through trials and triumphs, Lang Lang always retains his love for the piano. He shares his love of music with the reader. The writing style flows easily for younger readers to enjoy. Excellent autobiography - great read for all ages!

Lang Lang's story is one of struggle, sacrifice, conflict, and determination. In this autobiography, Lang Lang recounts his life the way he remembered it.

I loved reading this story because there was always something interesting on every page. Whether it was another conflict with his father or an upcoming competition, I could never find good place for me to stop reading. Therefore, I read the whole book in one sitting, and it was all worthwhile. I loved how he explained everything he felt at any given moment - I felt as though I am in Lang Lang's mind. His relationship with his father is an interesting one, but they always reconcile at the end. In my opinion, this book was not as emotional and moving as it could have been. There were many themes and motifs in the story that the author could have take more advantage of. For example, Lang Lang received a stuffed dog as a consolation price in an early competition (he finished 7th). Although he briefly mentioned it as his lucky symbol, I believe the message could have been a lot stronger had he mentioned it at the end of the book. Also, his father's standard pat on the back before every competition could have been used to a larger degree. Lang Lang spent a lot of time describing his childhood years, but not as much on his adult career (less than 20 pages). I would love to hear more about what he's doing as a professional pianist. But overall, I think Lang Lang did an excellent job sharing his story about the journey he took to become one of the best pianists in the world. This book is appropriate for readers of all ages - children and adults, and it will inspire all those who read it. I learned a very important lesson from this book, and it is that you can't succeed without hard work (in Lang Lang's case, hard work means six to eight hours of per day). If I were his father, I would be very, very proud.
