Excellent book!

This book is about the physical and psychological aspects of humans that cause us to 'do' religion. Although written in the 1970's only a very small part of it has been superseded by new understanding of biology and psychology, so it is very relavent for any person trying to understand what is going on with religion, faith and what people are getting out of this very costly aspect of human behavior.

It starts with a careful grounding in how very simple societies think of 'religion' and works its way through more complex ones. Although a dense read, nearly a text book, it is important to read and think about. The world has only recently become more complex, in terms of human psychology, and there are still tribal societies very much alive today - and the logic pattern is still very much a part of being human, even if the reader has never lived outside a major city.

Then the author discusses 'crisis cults' - how cultures try to make sense of things when their religious world view is no longer working properly and satisfying their genuine need for psychological balance. Humans need balance, emotional and psychological balance, to be able to function properly. As social creatures we need others to function with, and be comfortable with. Part of that balance, and finding sound communities to live in, understanding ourselves so we understand others too is necessary to being a complete human being.

Reading this will not cause a person to 'lose faith in god'. It will, however, dramatically change how a person defines god and certainly how they interact with clergy and dogma. And I find it helps explain a great deal about the contradictory behavior of religious people in general.

A Good Technical Packaging Book.

I was hired into the electornics packing business 31 years ago and this book was handed out by the coproration for all engineers. Someplace along the way I lost the original version and purchased a new copy. It provides all types of refernences for engineers that design 'anything', so I recommend it for all engineers and managers for that matter.

A MUST HAVE for the entrepreneur!!

This book is very comprehensive and touches on points of business that the creative artist ignores.....The tips on marketing/advertising are invaluable!! The 'cold-call' concept is elevated to reality in this book. Many designers/web developers do not have a clue to expand business beyond the ol' word-of mouth....This book makes networking an attainable goal! Another asset is the readability of this book. I read it cover-to-cover in about 2 days. You do not have to have a degree in marketing or accounting to grasp the concepts. It is about time that someone came up with a 'Business' book from a marketing perspective! I am so glad that I found this book.....before it was too late!!!

Very comprehensive, very thorough

With the Geek's Guide, Schmidt proves to the world that he has the'write' stuff. Schmidt has a knack for focusing on the most important aspects of any topic.
In terms of content, this book is jam packed with highly tailored and specific information crucial to sustaining a successful and profitable web development business. Although the book's focus is on web development business start-ups, anyone who is looking to strike out on their own in any field would find this book useful. Furthermore, potential clients of web development firms may find much of the information in the book useful when dealing with internet businesses and negotiating the creation of their own site.
The writing style of the book is very clear and concise and Schmidt leaves no room for misunderstanding in his prose. There is absolutely no internet hype or marketing spin in this book, nor are you treated to a dry, textbook or computer manual treatment of how to run a business. Personally, I found Schmidt's geek humor (there is one remark at the end of each chapter) to be well, in a word, geeky.
From an organizational standpoint, Schmidt gets you in the right frame of mind to run your own business by the end of the first chapter. Whereas most home-business books would devote all of their chapters to Freudian self-analysis (ridiculous intropspective and self-assessment questions), finding a good location for a business, and choosing the best form of business, Schmidt takes you through all of that in one balanced chapter. You will also get some very good ideas on how to build a good, winning, effective, and professional team.
His second chapter tells you in brutal realism just how your customers will look at you, and how you should carry yourself around them (still another chapter tells you exactly how to deal with your client's misconceptions and false expectations of the internet to your advantage). Four more chapters are devoted to making that all important, life-sustaining sale- from finding customers, planning and making the sales pitch, closing the sale and ultimately to writing up a contract. He wraps up the book with a chapter on growing the business and attaches a modest business plan in an appendix.
Schmidt earns my respect because he tells you upfront to obtain good legal and accounting help long before you launch your venture. Yet, the real value in this book is the way Schmidt lays out setting your rates and making certain that you get paid in two understandable chapters. If you are looking to get on the web with your own business in a big way, forget all of those other books and start reading this one today!

An Excellent Resource

For anyone wanting to learn how to set up and properly develop a web design business, this book is an excellent source of information. Each page provides useful information and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the sales and marketing information wasn't just regurgitated from other books.
I've had the book three days and have read it twice. The information is up-to-date and the methods and techniques shared are all useful. Quite honestly, I'd have paid more for this kind of information.
Having never submitted a review for books I've read, this must have made an impact. I strongly recommend this book for some real genuine insight.

The plot takes a melodramatic turn when Sophie is suddenly shunned by her old and new friends after she dances with a star football player on whom Kylie has long had a crush and whom the head cheerleader dated the previous year (“for three weeks”). Despite such contrivances, the tale convincingly conveys the social pressures of middle school, and the price and precariousness of popularity, offering a cheer-worthy blend of fluff and substance. The second Candy Apple title, Laura Dower's The Boy Next Door (ISBN 978-0-439-92929-5), is due out simultaneously. Ages 9-12. (Jan.)

If you are looking for an adventure book that has fun on every page, you should check out THE ACCIDENTAL CHEERLEADER. It's about two seventh-grade girls who try out for cheerleading, but what they don't know is that one of them made it onto the squad and the other is stuck being the school mascot.

After tryouts everything went downhill. Sophie doesn't know if the life of a cheerleader is her thing. What if her best bud, Kyle, isn't having fun? Should she stay with the most popular girls in school (and on the squad) or should she go back with her real friends? If she goes back to hanging out with Kyle, will she forgive Sophie for using her?

I think you should read this book because it has non-stop action! I give it 5 stars!

Grade 6 Up-Ehrmann's well-known inspirational work, written in 1927, offers cogent advice on how to live at peace with oneself. This edition is distinguished by Tauss's striking photographs, most of which show children and adults of different cultures. Each of the images captures the essence of the passage it accompanies. For instance, the opening sentence ("Go placidly/amid the noise and haste,/and remember what peace/there may be in silence") is matched with a scene of a deserted city street that brilliantly creates a sense of stillness. Lines on the timelessness of love ("Especially do not feign affection./Neither be cynical/about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment/it is as perennial as the grass") are accompanied by one photo that shows parents and children nestled in bed, and another of them engaged in a pillow fight. Perhaps the most memorable illustration shows a boy and a girl set against a galaxy of stars. This complements the life-affirming statement, "You/are/a child/of the/universe,/no less than the trees and the stars;/you have a right to be here." All of the photos are well composed and have a dreamy quality, suffused with a soft light. However, while the pictures have intergenerational appeal, the vocabulary employed and the philosophy expressed in the text are adult in nature.

Max Ehrmann (September 26, 1872 - September 9, 1945) was an attorney and businessman from Terre Haute, Indiana. He worked in his family's meatpacking business and in the overalls manufacturing industry before leaving at age 40 to write. Words for Life

Wonderful and simple words for life written in 1927 by Max Ehrmann. This 2003 version has photographs by Marc Tauss. I received it as a wedding present 2 years ago and it makes a perfect gift for anyone experiencing some kind of change in life as a reminder of some ancient wisdom. It is wonderful for yourself, but is also great for all types of events and stages of life... a graduation, new parents, a wedding, a loss, a need for peace or sanity, anything.

This is a very clever novel, and although it features the usual medical-thriller device, the deadly conspiracy, it's a far cry from the Robin Cook–style conglomeration of cardboard characters and chase scenes. This one is more in the Michael Palmer vein: well-drawn characters, a smart story, plenty of suspense, and even a little commentary on the nature of the medical profession. Excellent second novel

I'm not usually a fan of medical thrillers, but gave Joshua Spanogle's Isolation Ward a try and was glad I did. This guy can write! Hero Nate McCormick is a great flawed protagonist with a unique voice and someone who is easy to identify with. In Flawless, McCormick is back and Spanogle has managed to avoid the sophomore curse, returning with a novel just as good (if not better) than his first.

Nate has relocated to the West Coast to pursue a relationship with the girlfriend he reconnected with during his initial case (chronicled in Ward). He's jobless and hasn't found an apartment and his aimless state has started to wear on the burgeoning relationship. Into this state of things comes an old friend from his student days who wants Nate's help with something. But before Nate can find out what it is, his friend Murph is murdered, along with his wife and two children, plunging Nate into a complicated mystery swirling around a biotech company in the South San Francisco hills, coupled with Chinese gangsters and a series of photographs of women and men, faces disfigured by an agressive facial cancer.

Nate is warned off, his girlfriend is attacked, and several of the people in the photographs are killed in a variety of shocking ways, but McCormick just can't give up, feeling he owes something to the friend he lost track of. This is an excellent, fast-moving novel with three-dimensional, believable characters. Nate suffers for his investigation and his feelings of rage and helplessness are palpable. And his life continues to develop on the sidelines, in the manner of the best current detective fiction. Spanogle is a truly talented writer and I'm very much looking forward to his next novel. Flawless is very highly recommended!

3.25 stars: Fun page-turner for Robin Cook fans

I purchased this off-the-shelf because Booklist on the cover promised it "Could give Michael Chricton a run for his money. Skilled storytelling" and because it sounded like a unique concept - "Perfect patients, perfect victims, a medical nightmare come true".

With a likeable, but flawed main character who uses humor to offset stress, page-turning action, a host of REALLY, REALLY bad guys and bureaucratically challenged government agents, there's no doubt that the "Skilled storytelling." part is true.

There are a few flaws that keep this book for me from being more than just a slightly above average, fun page-turner.

1. Over the top characters and action - it's fun to read over-the-top sometimes, but while I liked and despised appropriate characters I never really cared when something good or bad happened to any of them.

2. The cover and title of the book (not to mention the blurb on the back) gives away what it takes Nate our hero - 289 pages to figure out. Fortunately, enough page-turning action and a sense of how you don't really know how it will all play out keeps you reading up to that point. It would be better if you didn't know exactly what every clue meant, so long before him.

3. Big over-the-top ending. It's a pet peeve of mine lately - how decent thrillers turn into cartoonish VERY, VERY BAD GUYS against GOOD GUY with impossible odds doing things that stretch far, far beyond the believable.

Bottom Line: Spanogle weaves a decent tale that will keep you turning the pages. He's not the next Micheal Chricton, though. He's more like the next Robin Cook - with his fun, over-the-top medical thrillers. And, if you like Robin Cook medical thrillers, the more you're bound to like this one - it's right up there with many of his.

I read his previous book, and was a little annoyed by the main character's persona, but "Nate" and every other part of the book was very much improved. Easily the best book I have read this year. Deep and well developed... more believable and not a plot that you can figure out quickly.

I highly recommend the audiobook on CD or at [...]... Scott Brick really brings this book to life.
