Trapped in the snow and facing starvation, the Donner Party is transformed from a group of cooperative and generous people into one plagued by suspicion and selfishness, resorting even to cannibalism (no graphic details). In the epilogue, readers are told that Deeds and his friend Edward Breen were among the first to discover gold in California. Using actual events and characters, this fictional journal brings a tragic story to life, showing the changes in people brought about by incredible hardships. Reading this book will make you think about what's important

In May 1846, a large wagon train of settlers left Independence, Missouri, heading West. Many Easterners were on the trails at that time, looking for land, business opportunities, and better lives. They traveled across the country in wagon trains to California and Oregon. But the people who headed for California on May 12, 1846, under the leadership of George Donner, did not arrive at their destination safely. Instead, they headed into history.
To readers, the name "The Donner Party" = cannibals. Beset with bad leadership, bad luck, bad timing, and bad decisions, the tragic Donner Party suffered unbelievable hardships. Trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains during a bitter winter, only 60 miles from their destination, the survivors began eating the bodies of those who had died.
THE JOURNAL OF DOUGLAS ALLEN DEEDS tells the story of The Donner Party through the eyes of a boy. Douglas is a 15-year-old orphan moving West to build a life for himself and become somebody. All he has is his horse. Without a wagon or any money to buy one, Douglas is grateful that Mr. Donner lets him hitch his dreams to the wagon train. He can shoot well, and he shares whatever. He becomes good friends with Edward Breen, whose generous family takes him in and makes him feel loved and needed. Douglas and Edward share their plans for making their fortunes when they get to California.
But the settlers don't make good time. They travel only a few miles a day. Months go by, during which other wagon trains arrive at their destinations, but The Donner Party just keeps slogging along the trail. All of them are greenhorns, even the leaders. And they are following the advice in a book written by Mr. Lansford Hastings. Everybody on the wagon train believes Mr. Hastings' book as if it were the Bible. Following his trails and his shortcuts, they ignore the advice of a mountain man who tells them that the trails Hastings took on horseback can't be followed by wagons and oxen. The settlers in the Donner Party believe that it's the mountain man who's lying, and that Mr. Hastings will meet them at Fort Bridger, just as he promised he would, and lead them to California. In fact, they believe Mr. Hastings all the way to their entrapment in the Sierra Nevadas.
In this book, you will meet every kind of human being there is --- the gullible, the boastful, the self-sacrificing, and the stingy. There are those who give their lives so others can live, and those who refuse to share their food with people who are starving to death. There are those who reduce themselves to cannibalism, and those who refuse to justify such acts. Who survives? At what cost? Reading this book will make you think about what's really most important in life.

A new My Name is America book about the Donner Party.

In the spring of 1848, newly orphaned after the death of his father and with only a horse and one hundred dollars to his name, fifteen-year-old Douglas decides to leave Missouri and head west to the paradise of California. He joins the Donner wagon train and expects to complete the journey in just a few months, and to be settled down in his new home by the first snowfall. Little does he imagine the disastrous journey and ghastly horrors that lay ahead. The men of the wagon train insist on following the unknown Hastings shortcut, believing it will shorten the journey by a month. They never expected to encounter scorching hot deserts and long stretches with no water. They never expected that their food would run out, that their animals would be stolen. But most of all, they never expected to be stranded by the first snowfall in the bitter cold Sierra Nevada Mountains. Making camp by a frozen lake they come to call Starvation Lake, the survivors can do nothing but wait for what may come, be it rescue - or death. Through it all, Douglas chronicles his experiences in his journal. I recommend this book to all readers who enjoyed the previous My Name is America books.

Once there was a boy who joined the Donner Party Expedition on the way to California who got in a lot of problems once he got stuck in the woods. Another time he almost died in a blizzard of cold ness and starvation.

The main character is Douglas Allen Deeds. He is a 15-year-old boy. He likes to go on adventures. He has a best friend named Edward.

The problems the train had got stuck in the snow. The Chickasha Indians stole and killed over 20 heads of cattle. Later in the book they tried to walk on foot, but some left and some died 2 got to California.

The boy tried to stay alive by eating food and not sharing with the others the food he caught. The main thing this book is about is completing his journey.

I think this book would be better for older kids. Because people get murdered, and die. It also had bad language. I thought this was a good story about a young boy's adventure.

In the first title, an illustration of a boy dangling a limp balloon in front of puzzled pets begs the question: "What happens when you fill a balloon with air?" A suggested activity blowing up a balloon and using it "to play volleyball with your friends" explains why the balloon stays aloft then floats to the ground. The second title asks kids to imagine a day at the beach but features activities they can try in a wading pool or bathtub.

PreSchool-Grade 2-These series titles offer fun-filled activities to use as introductions to basic scientific principles. Each book contains notes to parents, teachers, and child-care providers about the types of activities incorporated, readily available materials needed, and working with children to help them make observations with their "bodies and senses." Ages 4-9. Why does a small pebble sink in water while a big ship can float? What makes a balloon fly? Why do we smell cookies baking in the oven? How does the stink from a passing garbage truck reach us? The answers are complicated, but these playful picture books do a great job of using hands-on activities in daily life to explain basic science to young children. The book about water is full of splashing fun, teaching the concept of buoyancy by showing kids emptying containers into the sink, sailing boats in a pool, wading in the ocean. The book about air is more difficult, but in both books the writers include helpful information for adults about how to teach the science as an active part of the child's ordinary experience. The exuberant, colorful pictures add to the fun. The same cast of four children appears in both books (with a dog, a mischievous cat, and the occasional adult), exploring their world, asking questions, and then discovering astonishing patterns about how things work. A wonderful conclusion to Sofia's diary.

Ten-year-old Sofia Monari continues her diary describing her Italian immigrant family's life in Boston's North End. It's October of 1903, and Maureen, an Irish girl Sofia met in quarantine, has come to live with the Monaris after her mother dies and her father and siblings return to Ireland. Sofia describes her adventures with Maureen as they learn more about America; go to school; celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas; and help Sofia's older sister, Gabriella, begin a dressmaking business. Young readers who enjoyed the previous two books about Sofia, as well as other books in the My America series, will definitely enjoy this book.

A good conclusion to Sofia's story

It is 1903 and 10-year-old Sofia is finally getting used to life in the United States. Things are looking up now that her best friend Maureen, whom she met in quarantine, has come to live with their family on the north end of Boston. The two share many adventures as both are in the 5th grade. They have many new experiences including celebrating the various "new" American holidays. The future looks bright for Sofia as her parents are finally able to open their own grocery store. This was another good book in the My America series and a fitting conclusion to Sofia's story.

My daughter read the first book in school, and she loved it. I love being able to find additional books in the series in one place "Amazon". It was a great price with my prime two day shipping. She didn't have to wait long to continue reading the series. The book was cute and well written. She was able to feel like she knew more about her heritage, and what it was like to be an immigrant coming into the United States.

Good book, but always check the caloric contents

This book has a lot of good recipes that are very delicious. However, if you're on a diet and watching calories and sodium in addition to fat content, be sure to review what's in each recipe. A good portion of these recipes are low-fat but still high in calories and/or sodium. So just be careful.
One other observation; they give you a recipe for chicken stock at the beginning of the book, which looks pretty good. Problem is, it seems like nearly every recipe in the book requires the use of it. You can also use canned chicken stock, but then you have an even bigger sodium problem. If you want to avoid the use of chicken stock, it really limits the # of recipes you can use from this book.

About the Author
Jim Arnosky was born on Sept. 1, 1946, in New York. After high school, he attended one year of trade school and then joined the US Navy. His intense love of the natural world led him to pursue a career as a wildlife artist. Today, Arnosky is the author and illustrator of 98 books about wildlife and nature for children. He has received numerous honors for his work, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in science illustration. Currently, he and his wife live in northern Vermont.

This whimsical, comical and fun rhyming story about a turkey would be a great story for circle or story time!

A wild turkey flock can be very large. Tom is telling everyone about his family and the large flock that he comes from. When turkeys communicate they make all kinds of strange noises and, as most children know, they gobble. They are a heavy bird and have a bit of trouble when they want to take flight, but when they do they can go an amazing fifty miles an hour! Turkeys have to be fast and always on the lookout because gobble, gobble, they can be a tasty snack for other critters.

"I'm a turkey,
they call me Tom,
I got a turkey dad and a turkey Mom.
I got a turkey brother and sister, too.
I'm a part of a flock of 102 --
Wild turkeys.
Every one."

Although the book jacket states that this book "is a hilarious way to learn fun facts about America's favorite big bird," the facts tend to be very limited. I would not introduce this book as a learning tool, but rather one simply to have a lot of fun with and perhaps a stepping stone to learning more about the turkey if desired. There is a song that can be downloaded and played to a classroom or group of children. It is very catchy and lots of fun, but too fast to sing along with and turn the pages of the book at the same time. The art work was very whimsical, comical and quite appealing. If you are looking for a fun, entertaining book about the turkey, this would make a nice choice!

This is an amusing "spoken word song" about a turkey named Tom who describes his family, "I'm a turkey, they call me Tom, I got a turkey dad and a turkey mom. I got a turkey brother and sister, too." He declares that he is a member of a flock, and that they communicate just not in words, "We putt and peep and squawk and squabble - talking turkey. Gobble, Gobble." He chants, "But we must be careful, can't be hasty, `cuz lots of critters find us...TASTY! Not all the rhymes scan equally well. The acrylic paint illustrations are realistic like those rendered in his book, "All about Turkeys" (Scholastic Press, 1998); although they convey personality as well: one illustration shows Tom peering around a tree, "Always on the lookout". A free audio rendition by Jim Arnosky is available on the Scholastic website to download to an MP3 player.

Turkeys Don't Just Come From Shop-Rite...

I conduct storytimes for preschoolers at a public library and I use this book every November. It's a great way for children to learn about wild turkeys, and the turkey as a real animal, not just a cartoon character or something you buy buy at the grocery store. The rhyming text is catchy and fun, with just enough factual information mixed in. The illustrations are very well done with visual variety on each page. I highly recommend this book for ages 2-5.

Thin and small book, but still very nice.

Great book, but kinda small and thin. I had expected it to be a little thicker, but for kids its great. The pictures are nice and the words are very easy for children. I am happy with the purchase. The pages flip out with more information and pictures, so that is a nice touch. Overall I'm happy with it.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Greenstein's search for the official originator of the ice-cream cone starts with the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair where ice-cream vendors rubbed elbows with waffle bakers and five individuals claimed credit for the invention. The real creator, however, was Italo Marchiony, who patented a cone mold in 1903. Details are unknown so the author provides a story, stressing, "this is still the made-up part," and encourages readers to speculate along with her. Illustrations, monoprints overpainted with soft-toned gouache, are sketchy and quaint, leaning lightly on ethnic stereotypes for identification purposes (a Turkish citizen wearing a fez, a Frenchman wearing a beret). Each recto bears a full-page illustration, with smaller artwork breaking up text on the verso. In what may be the book's only shortcoming, some terms lack explanation, for example, "hootchy-cootchy dancers" and "U.S. patent office." Ice Cream Cones concludes with suggestions on how to eat this treat, research notes, and a substantial bibliography.

K-Gr. 2. Here's a fine example of a picture book with a Dewey classification number that clearly distinguishes between fact and fiction. The ice-cream cone has many fathers (and one mother). Beginning at the St. Louis World's Fair, where there were 50 ice-cream vendors and more than a few waffle makers, Greenstein introduces all the contenders for the cone title and briefly tells their stories. First there's the man who ran out of dishes and asked a waffle maker in a neighboring stall to provide eatable ice-cream holders. The waffle maker claimed the idea as his own. Another fellow said his girlfriend inspired his wrapper. Then there's the man, from Italy, who made a cone and patented it! Greenstein admits that she doesn't know exactly how Mr. Italio came up with that idea, but she offers a dreamy speculation--clearly stamped with such warnings as "Remember, this is still the made-up part." This looks and sounds just right for the age group. The monoprints overpainted with gouache feature appealing close-ups, bright colors, and lots of ice cream. The author's note adds extra information, and an impressive bibliography leads kids on to more facts. Ilene Cooper

Who came up with the ice cream cone?

The author of this book puts her research of the ice cream cone into an interesting, kid-friendly format. I love the way the author discriminates for the reader the difference in the facts and the fiction. That is what makes this book different! She begins with her researched facts, and then in the middle of the story, when her info becomes lacking, she writes "this is what I imagine" and further still, speaking directly to the reader, "Remember, this is still the made-up part." When the facts become clear again, she writes, "This last part is true..."

This book would be a great way to inspire kids to research topics of interest. It would be a great example of a topic in which not all of the data is out there- sometimes an investigator must piece together the puzzle. For teachers, I would use this book with elementary grades 3-5. (Teaching objectives: fact v. fiction, text structure.) It is way too factual for younger kids.

Half of what makes a picture book wonderful is, of course the pictures, and there are lots of books out there that can stand alone on illustrations. Ice-Cream Cones For Sale! can certainly rely on its beautiful, nostalgic monoprints but doesn't have to - it also tells the great and mysterious tale of the invention of the ice cream cone and the St. Louis World's Fair.
Greenstein's author's note is a great insight into how fun, exciting, and unpredictable history can be as she details some of the twists and turns of her own research.
A great book for reading and enjoying but also a great book to use for the start of a historical research project, to introduce the concept of synchronicity, and to inspire budding young inventors.

A simple story about the invention of the ice cream ...

A simple story about the invention of the ice cream cone. Since I am from St. Louis, I found the story a little condescending. The author hinted that St. Louisians were really bumpkins who didn't realize the ice cream cone was really invented in New York not at the 1904 St. Louis Worlds's Fair. The misunderstanding comes from the difference between the cake cone (invented in New York) and the waffle cone.

This is a flimsy, poorly printed picture book.
