Can a woman's version of The Prince actually work?
There's a sidelong sensibility at work in this post-feminist analog to the Renaissance's great work of strategy. Harriet Rubin urges women to triumph by turning their enemies into allies and their fear into power; by enlarging their sphere rather than defending it; and by learning to best instead of win.
But there's a delicate wryness to the art of balancing tensions to one's advantage. One of the most telling examples is that of Sun Tzu, who bet the emperor he could turn the twelve royal concubines into fierce warriors, but was bested by the concubines, who simply giggled when he barked orders at them. Modern women may find interpreting this a challenge, but an entertaining one.

How can women achieve power? Rubin, founder of Doubleday's imprint Currency, explains the strategies, tactics, and weapons women should use to reach their goals. The main strategy is not to play by the rules but to change the game. Eighteen practical tactics are listed and explained; for example, "reduce the conflict to its bare essentials." Weapons include tears, breasts, and jewels. Rubin's ideas are illustrated using historical figures such as Joan of Arc and Gandhi. She posits that women must go after what they truly want?if they believe they are invincible, others will believe it as well?and concludes that peace is the recognition of what cannot be controlled. Unfortunately, Rubin's work is full of simplistic statements and generalizations without clarification or substantiation, e.g., "men are afraid of women." All the talk about power and war going on here might leave Jill a dull girl if New York publisher Rubin weren't wise enough to explain the how-to's behind her you-should's. Obviously, she borrows more than a page from Machiavelli's 1532 treatise; but her counsel differs from that famous book in many ways. Tips such as "Learn not to be careful" and "Govern according to the nature of femininity" buttress her major theme: that princesses, to "win," must epitomize confrontational cooperation. Rubin does not mean for readers to have much latitude in reading between the lines; tightly controlled examples abound, from Scheherazade as a prime wielder of tension to disarm her opponent to the little-known tale of World War II resister Magda Trocma, who threw open her home to the persecuted. A well-written text harmoniously balancing philosophy and actuality. Barbara Jacobs

The Princessa

This book is a must have for every woman, this book validated for me how I view life and the people in it. I thought I was crazy alway's imagining myself as a general going into battle, I realize now I was and will alway's be a Princessa. although Mrs Rubin took too long time to get to the meat of this issue, this book is a must have for every woman.

A wetstone for the psyche.

As a male it was necessary to turn off much of my "programming" to absorb and reflect without judgement. This text will push your buttons and stretch your envelope. I cannot honestly say I agree with the author on every point, but then that would make for a boring world wouldn't it ? The test of theory is in the application. The bottom line ..... put the shared consciousness offered in the book to the test and you will find most of it is valid.

Tap your inner star

I grew up in politics. As a child, I followed my lobbyist father around the California State Capitol every summer, watching as he moved from office to office, persuading politicians, forging connections among staff, and watching the outcomes of critical votes. I liked nothing more than to sit in the gallery and listen to the voting while I watched the bustle of what was happening on the floor. And I learned that politics is about personal power and small scale one on one interactions.
Many politicians and those who surrounded them read Machiavelli and Sun Tzu. I read both the Prince and the Art of War, and though I tried to follow them in life, they left me empty, unhappy. In trying to control those around me, I lost something of myself. In not letting go, I sacrificed relationships and opportunities, and eventually I decided: This wasn't the way.
Enter the Princessa, which is Lao Tzu to the Prince's Sun Tzu. This is a book that talks about power through letting go. But don't confuse letting go with submitting, because they're not the same thing. It sounds counterintuitive, but by letting go, my personal power swelled. By admitting graceful defeat when I was defeated, I frequently got what I wanted anyway. By being a compassionate victor, my opponent came to realize that losing to me wasn't so bad, and the opposition I had to face in my life faded.
I recommend this book to anyone who is tired of fighting tooth and nail for everything that they get in life. The first few steps will be difficult, because a lifetime of habits must be unlearned, but the reward will be worth it.
I knocked off a star because of the examples of the employment of these techniques written in the book, which I felt were flat and unrealistic, and didn't accurately portray the complexity of human interaction. I understand the author's desire to clearly showcase her principles, but these examples will ill prepare a reader to add these new weapons to her arsenal.
