Thomas Bolden, successful 32-year-old investment banker and Harlem Boys Club Foundation trustee, has come a long way from his turbulent childhood on the mean streets of Chicago. They abduct him at gunpoint, but after a perplexing interrogation by members of a mysterious clan, a narrow escape reunites him with Jenny. Bolden already knows too much, though, and the organization of the novel's title—a centuries-old secretive order of powerful lawyers, businessmen and politicians convened to preserve political special interest initiatives that the country's founding fathers defended—soon systematically dismantle Bolden's life. He and a newly pregnant Jenny run for their lives, tracked at every turn by the well-connected "club," which is headed by retired detective Francois Guilfoyle. While they each investigate the clandestine group, a flurry of politically fueled machinations unfolds, setting the stage for the obligatory showdown. Disappointing....

I like this author and having read his latest, Rules of Deception, I noted that he had written this book which I had missed. Sadly, it could have stayed that way and I would be none the worse off.
One gets the feeling that Mr. Reich was in a hurry to write this book and in doing so he develops a scattershot storyline with a variety of characters who seem more ready for the psychiatrist's couch than for the more serious job of directing the country in a sub rosa manner.
The "Club" has invited the newly elected president of the United States to join their ranks. She has declined. Therefore she must be eliminated and why not do it on innauguration day?
How this plan is discovered and dealt with has it's moments, but they are too few and too far between. I bought this book from an Amazon bookseller, and if you care to read it, I would suggest you save your money and do the same.

Preposterous Plot

I love good conspiracy books. I like a believable super hero. The plot of this novel is absurd. The hero, Thomas Bolden, was abandoned at age 6 by his mother. She was an extreme left wing radical who had been pursued by police for participating in a bombing. Bolden grew up in foster homes and after a tough childhood worked his way up enjoying a successful Wall Street career. He is also just about Mr. Perfect. All of a sudden he is targeted by a high powered right wing group called The Patriots Club. The Club has existed and evolved since the days of George Washington. According to the author this club, which has included all Presidents,has secretly and behind the scenes determined U.S. policy since the country's inception. A master computer selects Bolden as a threat and and a bizarre kidnapping of him and his girlfriend ensues. Bolden takes on everything and everyone in his path and ultimately saves the Republic from The Evil. It was tough to get thru all this nonsense.
